I posted before about this, only 21 k miles on it, the local dealer says they have to remove the head; Called the local cummins repair shop and shop foreman said they can't do warrenty work on a dodge. Someone here said it can be done without removing the head by removing the plug and threading the head for a pipe plug. PLEASE give more details on this Havent been able to post for about 6 weeks so am anxious for some help from this site. thanks, ED

You might want to talk to another Dodge dealer if you have one close by. I had the same problem with mine a year ago, and my dealer in Omaha fixed it easily in less than half a day, without removing the head or anything invasive like that. Give drop me a note if you want, and I can turn you on to my local service department, and perhaps they could chat with your dealer. My email is: -- email address removed --

Emarsh: I too had the problem, and like your Dumba$$ dodge dealer they said that they would have to remove the head!. BS! don`t fix something -like a new head gasket when there is nothing wrong with it. Took it to another shop and talked to the tech. and between the two of us we came upon a fix , with only removing the turbo and loosening the down pipe. Took a 1/4" round piece of cold roll and put a small bend in it and drove the old one sideways in the hole and took a pair of 45* needlenose pliers and pulled it right out. Put some kind of sealeant on the new plug and a small ballpeen hammer and in she went!-NO Leaky! under warrenty also. hope this might help with your problem

Father in law's '01 had that problem, was peeing against the aluminum heat shield. I put that stuff that you mix up the hardener and the metal together (sorry, brain dead at the moment) and it worked. Then he had it repaired by his diesel mechanic who threaded it and put in a pipe plug. No problem and NO removal of head.

So was mine. :( Happened once; the dealer couldn't duplicate it & it never happened again. Go figure. Anyway, I'm glad it's not too hard to fix, just in case.

hard fix...

Same happpened to me. Fixed it in the truck without removing anything... was able to thread a small screw into the pinhole in the factory freeze plug...

grip it with pliers and pry it out... then somehow got the new one tapped back into that hole after about 15minutes...

Hasn't leaked in 80k miles...

well it has stopped for now, but I would like to fix it before it happens somewhere out on the road.

for anyone who replaced it, did you do it from the bottom, OR take everything out and stand somehow between the block & fender. I can only see it with a mirror from above, how the heck can you thread a small screw into if you can't barely see it?????

mine is in the BACK of the cylinder head, NOT towards the rear on the SIDE of the block?
