Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 0216 how long?

well i have had this code with the CEL on for 2 yrs and it wont die. i have no noticeable issues with performance and mileage is still at 15 by hand calcs. same as the day i drove off the lot with it. not sure what to do, dont want to spend 2k if its not dead yet. when it first came on i went to buy vp44 then the light went off on the way to buy it. i didnt worry and didnt buy it. couple o months later it came on again. this time it has stayed on for over a year and a half. went to go get a pump and light went out again on the way to get pump. still runs fine what gives?anyone else with same exp. ?

0216 is a timing code and can be caused by several things some electrical and some mechanical. Occasionally, if you have the pump wire tapped you will get the 0216. Does it come back right after you clear it? If you don't have any other signs; multiple codes, flat pedaling, missing or clearly a loss of power. I'd run it until it dies. A good rebuilt pump is $1,000 to $1,500 plus labor if you pay someone.

mine ran for about 2 years before the dead pedal got to bad for me to stand so I got it changed out under warranty. Went from dead pedal a couple times a month to a couple a day and that was too much. Some may run longer others may quit right off the bat, just one of those things.

Hey, if she keeps on running and you don't mind being stranded at the worst possible time or place, then keep on running it. If you are like me and have towing insurance on your auto insurance policy. It hopefully should not be too big of a deal when it finally dies. When mine threw a P0216 code, it was one month from the end of the warranty so I had it changed out but it was still running pretty good and had only stumbled twice. It ran good otherwise.

My trucks PO said it started throwing the 216 code at 63k and i finally replaced the pump at 123k, i was getting dead pedal constantly. It got wayyy to annoying, probably have it 5-10 times in a mile plus no pedal when the engine temp is below 170 or so.

My truck has had a P0216 code for six months now. I've cleared it several times, but it always returns. It now has dead pedal issues 2-3 times a day; the worst incidence being in the am after initial start-up. The dead pedal has caused me some anxiety on the freeway a few times, so as soon as the weather warms up consistently I'm going to replace the injector pump. This is the only DTC the truck has shown during this period other than a P1693.

My two cents worth, drive it as long as you can, but you better start saving the money to buy a good pump and lift pump or you could just dump it off on someone else. Surely you aren't that mean to do that. I drove mine for about two years with the 0216 code and dead petal issues,and I put around 60,000 miles on it before it finally crapped out. So far you sound like you have been pretty lucky, but I bet you that your luck will soon run out, especially if you use your truck like it was meant to be used!! These trucks were made to WORK not to drive back and forth to work. lol

on my truck that same code came on for a while. we figured it was the lift pump dying that was causing the code, so we replaced the lift pump w/ a fass pump, cleared the code, and it hasn't come on ever since. also, my vp pump is a remanufactured unit, if that has any effect on it.

Is your vp pump a remanufactured unit 24Vpirate? (if it is it will say so on the pump itself)

no mine is not remand its all stock. i have the money for the vp and a fass. i guess i just want to kill the one i got before parting with this hard earned cash. maybe i will just put the fass in and go from there. its just weird the 2 times i made a appointment to change it the CEl WENT OUT?

Well since you've got the money, take it and put it in a safe place, because sooner or later you'll need it!! Like I said I was lucky enough to get about two years out of it by babying it and trying not to tow too many heavy loads. But definately keep the money in a safe place. Blue Chip has an upgraded lift pump that is susposed to be better than the junky stock one.
