0216 question? (updated) and price to change out vp44

well a few days ago i noticed that when on the throttle 75% while shifting from first to second my truck stumbled a bit. and a puff of white smoke came out of the tail pipe. no CEL but i had the 0216 code. no codes any other time just some times when at the right throttle position the truck stumbles and puff of white smoke like its cutting timing around 2400 rpm. now if i drive the truck nice there is no code but if i get on it from first to second shift only is when it does this. (auto trannie) any ideas? truck is stock 140,000 on it FF is ok and have good FP i know this is the VP44 death code but i can only replicate it when doing the above.

Yes the VP-44 is dieing. It has a timing problem. i bet you will notice a loss of mileage if you have been checking it.

I drove mine 5000-6000 miles after I noticed the code.

I should have changed it sooner because the Blue Chip pump is working fne.

well nothing yet but thats the weird thing thats the only way i get a 0216 is when i get on it from first to second. other than that its fine the rest of the time i can punch it drive it hard and no codes should i be worried?

I suspect over time it's gonna get worse. I just helped my brother in law do his a few weeks ago. His was acting up with pedal issues for 6+ months before his finally starting doing it more than not. Start saving before it puts you on foot IMHO. I suspect the end is coming.

When you do have to do it we found it much easier to just pull the timing cover off. It's alot easier to align the pump shaft key on the gear when your not doing it blind. Don't ask me how I know!

Yep, it sucks! My turn is coming... I can feel it! I'm at 179k on the original VP myself. Fingers crossed, knocking on wood.

I think I am going to need a new VP for my 98. I have 205K on the clock. Where did you buy your pump and is it a though project? I do most of the work on my truck, mostly brakes, front end, etc. Any info you can give me would be helpful.

i just performed the install two days ago. i was getting deal pedal and it had the 216 code. i ended up driving the truck for another year like that untill the dead pedal just got so bad it would happen 25 times in 25 miles. i think the install is pretty simple. i did it myself in about 2. 5 hrs. i did get some help with aligning the keyway. i had someone look with a mirror and watch the shaft come into the gear. it took some small adjustments of the shaft to get it right on but it went in with no problems. i used some transmission assembly lube to help with holding the key in place. i dont see any reason why the key in the new pump could not be glued in place go guarantee no problems. other than that the install was very easy, just alot of bolts, nothing hard. i only removed the front set of lines and loosened the holding brackets on the rear injectors and pushed them towards the block to allow the pump to come back and out of the bolts. MAKE SURE THE KEYWAY IS IN THE UPWARD POSITION before you remove the pump or you are going to have a very bad day. if you have any questions about anything else feel free to ask.

well i just checked with the local shop and they only want 1,050 for the pump and $385 for labor for a total of 1,435 for the replacement and removal of the VP44. i was comparing prices and i think that is super cheap. it is worth $400 especially when i can drop it off in the morning and pickit up after work... . SWEET!! Oo. what do you guys think is this a good price?
