There are many vendors here that sell VP units. Industrial Injection, is one.

Shop around and find the best price and a vendor you feel you can contact.

The R&R is pretty straight forward but problems can rear their ugly head. If you have the skills to to swap a 350 in a GMC you can do the dirty deed on the VP.

There are threads here that describe the procedure to a tee. Do a search, it will help with your computer skills.

The problems that have occurred with the gear removal are documented in the threads you "just" searched. If you have problems ask again, we're here to help.

P. S. I'm doing a search now to help out.

VP Removal

THERE is a special puller for poping the timing gear loose but I use a steering whee puller and it works fine. Just leave the puller attached to the gear once its loose to hold it in position untill the new pump shaft is back in the gear. bar the engine over at the alternator nut untill the key on the pump shaft is up before breaking the gear loose so the key doesnt fall out into the timing cover. I believe the timing nut torque is 125ftlbs. only remove the first 4 injector lines from the block the last 2 are a *&^% to get back on. use some light assembly lube when you reinstall the injector lines on 1-4 it will help to seat them line tork is 28ftlbs. you will also need new air intake horn gaskets the old ones will tear when you remove the air horn from the intake manifold. also there is a hard to see rear mounting bracket that bolts the rear of the pump to the block. if the pump doesn't come out without to much trouble you forgot to unbolt that bracket.

The job is just mostly just nuts and bolts and a few hannesses. good luck and expect a lot of cranking to get it restarted when your done.

thank you for any help... . I am also trying to work this computer and just trying to post and then go back and read the replies are a real chore... . not to good at this... But--I had a small block enj. that I have changed in gas rigs... just don't know that much about diesals... am very willing to learn tho. . guess I'd better since I have to work on them now.

Get a Haines manual from Advance Auto or local auto store... . they are very detailed on this procedure. I thought I was the only one who used a steering wheel puller... . works great.

Don't be scared..... thats how we all learned... . just rip into it, but read the manual first & pay attention to the alignment on the gear to be sure to get it right. You can see in there by using a mirror to align the gear. Help is here if you need us. Good Luck

Mike, I have this number on my injector pump it is 0470506027 and they have a high output injector pump that is 0470506028 this is at industrial injection website. my question is--do you or any of the others know whether it would be an advantage to go with the high output pump or stay with the orginal? thanks for your help

thank you... . I will need all the luck I can get... I do appreciate all of you helping tho.

am not sure wheather to trust myself to do it--or--try and scrape up enough money for the auto pros to do it and clean my pockets... I'm going to make my son help me tho... he he... . he went to collage and he is a GMCtec. I think he's kind of scared he will mess it up but---what do you all think---try it????It wouldn't be so bad if the parts wasn't so high --where if you messed up---the parts wouldln't be so high to replace..... so---whats your thoughts ?

I'd say that we didn't learn to walk upright by being scared of falling. Follow the book & you should be alright.

Not to expensive

I think is only 3 hours of shop time to change a pump. If you trust you rmechanic just pay the 3 hrs shop time and save headaches of trying to do it your self.

I hate paying people to work on my vehicles and usually end up figuring out evey thing on my own as I go but Im just neurotic that way. most of the time I spend 2 to save paying some one els 1

I thought it was around 6 hours shop time... . in that case I'd probably pay the shop if you aren't sure you can do it.

thanks for the input... I've had pretty bad luck when I have had any of my vehicles in the shops ---so--I try to do most of my own work... every once in a while, I have thought I couldn't work on something and then let a shop work on it... Then regret it ... end up having to usually redo it myself... . that was all on gas rigs tho
