AS soon as my fuel light came on I pulled into a station and got a load of fuel. I took on 34. 7 gallons. Not much reserve left. Kinda scary.

How much fuel have you all been putting into these 35 gallon tanks?

Wow!

As soon as my DTE on the computer reads "0", I fill up and can only get 30-31 gals in the truck, (See the thread on topping off your tank).

I had a Dodge Stratus years ago that the low fule light came on with only 1/2 gal remaining. Ran out of gas on the busiest street in Colorado Springs CO during rush hour when I was late to pick up my son from school. Go figure!.

Your service man should be able to adjust this, though.

I too, have the same problem. On my second fill-up, I put 34. 9g in the tank. If I remember correctly, the manual says that the low fuel light will come on when you have around 8 gallons of fuel left. I called the dealer and notified them of the problem. They ordered a new "fuel level unit" for the tank. They called me when the part came in. Took the truck in the next day to get the unit replaced. On the next tank, I filled it up with 33. 5g and still no light. I have not contacted the dealer again, been too busy. But I just keep the trip meter displayed and fill up at 500 miles give or take a few miles. I now have 3500 miles on it and still have not seen the light (pun intended  )

Too bad, my first post has to be about an minor issue.

But, I STILL love the truck. This is my first Diesel and from the looks of it, I won't being going back to the gas guzzlers. I really love the smell of diesel in the morning.

How does 39. 8 gallons sound? Ran with low fuel light on for 120 miles then squeezed in the last 5. 5 gallons till it was at the brim!!

If the tanks can really hold almost 40 gallons when empty, perhaps that extra 4 or 5 gallons everyone sqeezes in after the pump shuts off is space that is susposed to be there in the tank for expansion. I have put in 30 gallons one time, the fuel light had come on about 4 miles prior. When the pump stops I just put in a litle more to make the $$ and even number then stop.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply`s.

I hate not knowing how much is really left when the light comes on. It is tempting to carry 5 gallons and let it cough but I am worried about their being a problem getting prime back. Some of the fuel stops are far apart in the desert and it would be nice to know my limits.

Maybe its the fuel stations?

I had this problem with another truck. It only happened at two stations in my area. I could put 8 gallons more then the max!

Metering was adjusted for the owners profit.

So far I have only had the low fuel light on once and it took 31 gallons to fill on the 04'.

I am with scott1 on this, are you really getting a gallon of fuel for a gallon paid for. Wouldn't hurt to measure. Might explain why you can fit 40 gallons "wink wink nudge nudge" in a 34 gallon tank.

o4 3500 fuel tank

I finally checked my tank size. Well I got close anyway. I read a post in one of the forums from a guy that ran his dry and put in 41 gallons. So today I grabbed a 5 gal can of fuel and went for a drive. After the fuel light came on I went another 100 mile. I was tired of driving and next to a station so I decided it was close enough. It never did cough. The overall average for the tank at 726 miles was 17. 88 mpg. I put in 40. 6 gal right to the top of the neck.

I wish DC would just say we have a 40 gal tank instead of saying at 35 gal you need fuel but it is up to you to figure out how soon.

How long after the nozzle clicked did it take you guys to fill up to the top of the neck? I usually round up to the nearest $ and stop. I also fill up at a busy truck stop, so I can't spend a lot of time putting 30+ gallons in the truck.

Fill up

The tank usually holds another 4 0r 5 gallons after the nozzel clicks off. It is pretty slow going. Watch the foam go down in the neck and then get a few tenths in each time.

I have never had the low fuel light come on but I tend to start looking to fill er up at the 1/4 tank mark. When the nozzel clicks off I can always get another 3 to 3 1/2 gal in but again its slow goiung for those few gallons to top her off.

I think that if you are putting 3 or 4 gallons in after the pump shuts off the 1st time, you are overfilling the tank. I've heard this can cause the sending unit to fail.

I think some of you guys had better start worrying NOT ONLY about the $$$ of fuel BUT they are charging YOU more than you actually received!

Low fuel indicator

The service manual says that the low fuel indicator should come on when the fuel level gets down to 20% of capacity. So when the light comes on you should have 1/5th of a tank left.
