Behind and above the fuel filter, next to the firewall there is a 90* connector in the 1/8" vacuum line. I removed that connector and replaced it with the restriction connecter.

when you fasten it,how did you splice it back to gether, how long of the factory vacuum line did you cut?can I get this part at Advanced or Auto Zone,we dont have and O'rielys.

Just a question. Have you looked under the hood yet? Not trying to sound like a butt, but it's easy to find. It is a factory splice in the vacuum line above the fuel filter. All I did was remove the 90* connecter and install the straight connecter. I did not have to cut the vacuum line. I'm not sure that is the optimum place to put it, but it was the easiest.

Not sure if it is available at other stores. They should be able to look it up in their computer. Hope this helps.

I live in Pampa, about 60 miles NE of Amarillo. We had about 1/2" of ice. Amarillo had it worse. They had a few inches of snow on top of that. We see some wierd weather here in the panhandle. The western part had mostly all snow, ice in the middle, and about 2" of rain in the SE.

OOOO yeah its a lot colder there than I like..... I do like the pheasant hunting there though.....

Check (or have someone check) the Fuel Actuator. Mine (on an '03) went out @ about 155,000 with similar symptoms (and no codes) and this was what it turned out to be.

Good luck,

come to find out the surging problem on my 03 was the BD triple dog, cause I downloaded it out of my truck to take it to the DD,and when I drove it down the road it was acting fine, then I stopped along side the road and hooked my tst/mp8 up and it ran fine, who knows

It may likely be the result of enabling the low end toque option... try the triple dog program without that option enabled and see if the surging is there.

Let me know.

Check it for damage and shake it. If it DOESN'T rattle, replace it.

To install the new one, install o-rings, then lube them with a light grease. Using new mounting bolts, first tighten them to 3 N-m (27 in. lbs. ). Then tighten them to 7 N-m (62 in. lbs. ) DO NOT PAUSE MORE THAN 2 MINUTES BETWEEN TIGHTENING STAGES as the bolts may lose their ability to retain torque. Make sure the FCA is mounted flush to the pump. Connect the electrical connector. Start engine and check for leaks.

Sorry I can't remember what this gadget costs. Shouldn't take much more than an hour but you need a good t-wrench.

It cleared up my surging problem.

Good luck,

BLambert

I just replaced what I thought to be the FCA on dad's '03. It had a wicked surge on cruise, a fair amount of smoke at idle, and lately it idled so bad I thought it was going to die. Smoke and rough idle are gone now. Don't know about cruise surge yet.

The reason I said "what I thought to be the FCA" is because Cummins calls it an "actuator, ETR Fuel Control" and the new ones do not rattle. Also there are 3 screws. Not trying to be picky, just makin' sure were talkin apples/apples here.

Cummins part #4932457 for all CP3 trucks. $235. 40 shipped for 2 of them.

I replaced mine as well at the same time. Took about 1/2 hour for both. Dad's needed a torx bit on a 1/4" ratchet w/ extension because one of the bolts was too tight for me to break loose with a normal torx wrench. The electrical connection on his was also very stubborn. I had to squeeze the tab with a pliers... kinda nerveracking. My '04. 5 w/o the APPS in the way was much easier. New bolts were not included, didn't think of replacing the old ones. I guess I should check on that after a week or so.
