DUALLY REAR END WHINE AT 60 TO 70 MPH JUST CRUISING. TURN OFF THE RADIO, LET UP ON THE ACCELERATOR AND IT'S TOTALLY QUIET. THE DANA 80 WAS QUIET ALL THE TIME. TBOB
 
Sounds like its time to take it back to the dealer and have them check the oil level. There have been some reports of low oil level in some of them. Could be something else though but I would get it checked.
 
Trying to correct improper R/P adjustment at most dealerships ranks right up there with believing in Santa Claus... 3 outta 4 such cases *I* have seen, result in NO improvement, or worse whine and related troubles than ya started out with!



If yer local DC dealer doesn't correct it first try, you'll probably be money and frustration ahead to just take it to a GOOD rearend shop... And it's EXTREMELY rare for such whines to stop on their own - if anything, they usually get worse...

My SRW 3500 is doing the same thing.

I've got a haul to make for new years, but right after that trip, it's going back. The dealer can fix the rear end, and the TPS that seems to be "miss" every now and then.

I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER TODAY. THE TECH SAID I HAD TO LIVE WITH IT. THEY TRIED TO FIX ANOTHER ONE AND FAILED. SOUNDS LIKE IT'S TIME TO AMERICAN AXLE. TBOB
 
I would insist that they give you that statement in writing. Then tell them someone will be sued if the axle fails after 70,000 miles. If the gear teeth aren't lined properly, I believe it will shorten the life of your axle.
 
I would make them fix it. It will lead to nothing but problems. Mine has NO noises whatsoever... so obviously it can be done right..... CJ
 
Many car and dealer light truck dealer techs don't have the knowledge, experience, or the tools to properly "set up" a rear axle. I would look for a dealer who will "farm out" the job to a rear axle shop or a medium/heavy duty truck dealership.



I worked for a medium/heavy duty truck dealer for many years. Our shop did the local Ford and GM dealer's light duty truck axle work for them.

If it makes you feel any better, I used to work for an automotive warehouse where we had an '00 F-150 that had been in a flood (we bought it new, but the knuckleheads at Ford never bothered to mention the truck spent 2 weeks in about 2 ft. of water:mad: ). Anyway, it had a wicked bad rear-end whine after the axle was "refurbished" by a local dealer. Truck went over 200K without any rear axle problems, except for the incredible whine.
 
If the dealer sells JEEP he will have guys in the shop that do differantials. The reason D. C. is using American axel was the repeated failures in Gran Cherokees. The only techs in our shop that didnt do Diffs was the lube and alignment men. If a new tech was hired and he said he didnt do diffs HE learned in a hurry. Other techs made sure of that and after doing a few he THEN went to differantial class. So days some techs set up three to six units fronts and rears. The once in a wheel full size truck was almost gravy.
