I am finishing up my build up of an 03' SO that I blew about 2 months ago. I have been at it forever it seems, but the finish line is getting close. I have started from scratch. All new pistons, bearings, valves etc... I am also running a Scheid performance cam, done some flow work on the heads, and I am now going to be running a set of 120hp edm's. My question is with the gasket and studs. My shop that is doing the work on the block and heads is continually trying to talk me out of the 14mm studs and Fire Ring kit from Scheid. I already have these pieces purchased and at his shop, but he is continually telling me that I don't need to run them. Oh yeah, I'm also running a TST/EZ stack and BD's Twin Turbos. Should I run the larger studs and fire-rings or not? I don't know what to do here. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

I'd rather be safe than sorry. You have them, install them! From the resistance you are getting from the machine shop, I wonder if they know how to machine for them.

I second that.

Maybe you should take it to Schieds if they dont want to do it, dont let them make the decisions about what you want done to your truck your the one that has to drive it everyday.

Maybe you should take your engine to someone who has experience dealing with high performance diesel or gas engines. I have been O-Ringing engine blocks of gas high performance blocks for years and increasing cylinder bolt stud sizes to ensure positive pressure locks and engine sealing of high compression engines. These engines had nowhere near the compression ratios that our trucks have; and I definitely needed the extra machining on those blocks. As others on here have said, you have the parts, get them installed... . by another shop. ;)

Scheid did everything you mentioned to my '04. (cam, heads, pistons, bore, 14mm, fire ring, etc) I was going to run their twin kit and they said the 14mm and the fire ring will hold a 100psi. I said go for it. Wasn't that much more and now I have the piece of mind my head aint coming off under any circumstances. I ended up not doing their twins (wifey) but one day they'll be on there. I'm with everyone else on here. If this place won't do it. Take it to a place that will. Also might want to think about trans upgrades while you're down. . 02¢
