03 HO oil pressure

Hey,



Have a question re my "03 HO's oil pressure. After warm-up it varies with engine RPM. Is this Normal? ( It never falls out of the "normal" range. ) On previous (gas) vehicles I've owned the pressure remained constant (after warm-up), even at idle. Thoughts?

The gage is fake, er. . I mean virtual (try doing a search in this forum).

It's all just a big show and yours sounds like it works just like the rest of ours.

The "dummy" gages you are refering to are cheap and very innacurate ... ... not much better than a "idiot" light.



Back in the muscle car days, the Hemis would drop to less than 10 lbs at idle and hit 60+ when reved.



My sprint motors will peg when cold (100+) at idle, and drop to 30 at idle warm. An accurate gage will almost mimic the tack.



Old rule of thumb ... ... ... ... ... ... 10 lbs of pressure for every thousand RPM is plenty of oil.



Nowadays, they are even dropping that figure, it takes HP to drive the pump that hard :--)

An accurate gage that is reading actual oil pressure (not a damped signal) should vary with engine rpm and temperature of the oil. Why? Because the oil pump is being driven by the engine. It is a gear type pump that has a certain postive displacement per revolution. Rotate it faster and it will pump more volume.

I do nto know on the new engines, but my first and second gen engines have a pressure regulator that should prevent an over pressurized conditions due to a pressure relief valve built into the oil cooler (passenger side of the block on a second gen). The second gen theoretically should never see more than 65 psi as this is where the pressure relief opens and dumps oil back to the pan.



Wonder what the new HO is set at - the same? Higher?
