The "dummy" gages you are refering to are cheap and very innacurate ... ... not much better than a "idiot" light.
Back in the muscle car days, the Hemis would drop to less than 10 lbs at idle and hit 60+ when reved.
My sprint motors will peg when cold (100+) at idle, and drop to 30 at idle warm. An accurate gage will almost mimic the tack.
Old rule of thumb ... ... ... ... ... ... 10 lbs of pressure for every thousand RPM is plenty of oil.
Nowadays, they are even dropping that figure, it takes HP to drive the pump that hard :--)
