Hello! TDR members, another new member just arrived. I have been viewing this website for months and can say it is great, lot's of good information. I'm glad I joined. Ok has any one heard of a problem with the 03 SO/250hp having a knock in the engine. I have a friend/co-worker that has a 03 DRW 4X4/SO250hp/auto that was purchased 12/02. Around 10,000 miles detected a knock in the engine. He took it to our local Dodge dealership and they ended up keeping it for three +weeks and never did find out what was causing the problem. Even had the Cummins rep drop by and had him scratching his head. The dealership did two complete tare downs only to find out when they put it back together it still had the knock. Ended up my friend got a new engine out of the deal. The dealership told him that this was the second one they had heard about, the other was some where at a dealership in Colorado.

That's the first one I've heard of. Also the first I've heard of a dealership doing Cummins engine tear downs. Two on the same engine at that. Something smells funny here. Welcome aboard. You'll learn alot here!

A neighbor of mine has a SO, bought around the 1st of the year. He bought the Dodge after he had 2002 PSD that was in the shop more than at home. Anyway, he developed a knock at around 12,000 miles. Took it to the dealer, they found nothing. One week later it started knocking bad, so he took it to another dealer in Boise. They found a broken piston. He got a new motor out of it.

This happened the week I bought mine.

When he walked over to see my new truck, I asked him not to touch it. :D

I was afraid he would jinx it.

I know what your saying on the jinx part. That friend of mine is alway's walking by my truck in the morning's with his hand next to his ear saying I thought I heard some funny sound coming from your truck. Mine just turned over 10,000 last night.

SteveM I don't really know about their procedures (Dodge that is) . But my friend's wife went to check on the truck to see if it was ready and they took her back to the shop area to see it ,and she told her husband it was torn down with parts all over the floor and couple pistons laying there.

They must have changed. When I left the D. C. dealer I was at Cummings under warranty WERE not torn down at dealer level. 4. 7's were not either. I left two years ago.

Like I said before I don't know Dodge's procedure's on their fix's,but to carry the story further on the third + week it was in the shop my friend was starting to get a little p---ed off that they could not find the problem. They offered him and his wife a deal to trade the truck for another truck on the lot, less the mileage difference (which he told me was going to be around $3500. 00 difference. ) He ask me about the deal and I told him if it was me I would want a new engine if I liked the truck. Couple day's later he said they were ordering him a new engine. What surprized me was that they recalibrated, rolled back--------the odometer to read 0 after the new engine was installed. Hey! the rest of the truck still has 10,000 miles on it. It may not be normal procedure but I'm just going by what he told me. I have no reason to believe he would lie to me.

In 25 years in dealers/auto repair NO ONE rolls back mileage for ANY KIND of repair. ITS ILLEGAL AS HELL!The exception is analog speedo heads that are replaced, comes shipped with miles zero and auto has a repair order/a LABEL and some manufacturers require it ENGRAVED on body/DOOR latch area/VIN plate. Some have replacements in RED odometer letters as a red flag to a replacement. BUT not for engine/trans/frame etc replacements. :--)

this is not good.

Just this week, mine has started knocking at idle and very light throttle. At say 1/3- to - full, no knock. Upon release, the knock returns. It is not bad, but is beginning to concern me. I just rolled 11,000 miles.

Was thinking a loose rocker, or something

Be careful confusing a knock with the pilot injection turning on and off!

Off-idle knock thread

With all due respect, Tony T's story is verrry fishy! Odometer rollbacks? A dealer doing a teardown? A knock with no cause found, even after a teardown? Just being my usual skeptical self... I mean no disrespect at all!

Same here. I mean no disrespect but it's not too credible. It smells alittle like someone wanting to even up the score card with the troublesome 6. 0 release. Those guys have pictures and names of dealerships and dates.

All four of my Cummins engines have had a slight knock sound to them from inside the cab. The #6 cylinder is right behind the radio and it's what we hear most. It smooths out under load. In the article about pilot injection Cummins said they left "some" diesel music there to please the diesel music lovers club but quiet enough to pass through a Wendy's drive through without having to shut down. Mine is alittle noisier than others I've heard or driven. Maybe a slight difference in the reading from the fuel rail pressure sensor. Not a problem.

OK! First all being one of the new kids on the block I wanted to make it clear I am not a crap starter. I've been accessing this website for several months now as a guess looking at all the very good information before I became a member. I thank each one of you for your help. The 03/knock story was told to me by a coworker/friend which the 03 DC belongs to his wife,he has a 95 3500 4x4 DRW/5-SP/12V he bought new. I'm not a mechanic or service writer so the procedure's they do I have no idea. I build roads for a living run a 12G CAT motorgrader, something breaks or problem come's up with the machine I get on the company radio and call for a mechanic. I'm not here to blow smoke up your south end. As far as tear downs go in 96 I had a 95 Chevy Z71 that at 27,000 miles the trans went out on the way back from a deer lease. Chevrolet towed it to the nearest dealership to be checked out. The service writer told me on the phone that there was not enough damadge done to put in a new remanufactored trans that his mechanic could rebuild it there in the shop. This was in West Texas at a Chevrolet dealership. Anyway thanks for any information in the future. -----------------Tony T.

I agree with ya Steve. No offense to anyone but Ive been heavily involved with CTD's since the beginning and I have never heard of anything like this. My B. S. meter is pegged.

Tony, it sounds like your friend may be a bullskitter. I have a friend like that. He's the Earnest Hemingway of BS. If you're not mechanically inclined or haven't been around the Cummns Dodge camp very long, your friend may be feeding you a line of crap and when you pass along his tale of ill fate, it makes you appear to be the BS'er. Best to reply to a friend like that as "boy that doesn't sound good" and leave it alone. It's a federal offense to tamper with an odometer and not even in DC's interest to do so. And to tear down an engine twice with parts all over the floor and not find a problem that's likely to be combustion knock anyhow, is very unprofessional. Unless I'm missing something, DC sends major engine teardowns to the nearest Cummins shop and DC picks up the bill for warranty work. No disrespect intended and I think I see the picture now. You've been fed a line.

Thanks: Steve for the moral support. I learned a lot from reading your past forums. Different stuff to check out on the DC 's still learning more about them every time I log on.

FOR ALL OF THOSE WHO DONT KNOW DURAMAX AND CUMMINS HPCR HAVE A KNOCKING SOUND WHICH IS INHERRANT TO THE BOSCH HPCR. LOOK AT THE DIESELPAGE. COM AND YOU WILL SEE WHAT I MEAN. I HAVE THE KNOCK AND IT WILL PROBABLY DO THIS FOR 450,000 MILES. SOUNDS LIKE THE SOME MECHANICS ARE FOOLS. TEAR DOWN TWICE FOR SOMETHING THEY SHOULD HAVE KNOWN WAS NORMAL NO WONDER THEY DID NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG EITHER TIME?????? :-laf :-laf :-laf SOME MECHANICS:mad: (BY THE WAY I HAVE MY PANTS LEGS PULLED UP)
