03 Manual Transmission Ticking Sound

This truck makes a ticking sound only in 5th and 6th gear. The noise was first noticed when letting off the throttle and coasting in gear but started doing it under heavy load also. It seems to be coming from the transmission. The mileage is about 180K. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You might want to try pulling the PTO covers and having a look inside for debris.

How often do you change the fluid, and what type of fluid do you use?

@rbattelle, I'm not sure what was used in it before but it has Amsoil now. This is for a friend by the way.

@HOBrian, every time he lets off the throttle or is under heavy load.

Could be a clutch problem. How old is the clutch and is the truck stock?

If it were me, I'd pull the PTO covers and look inside.

The truck is doing 100 hp over stock but the clutch is still stock. Not sure on the age.
