03 nv4500 clutch

i had my clutch replaced on my 03 not even 15k ago. when i am sitting in neutral without the clutch depressed it makes a rattling noise that goes away when i depress the clutch. it seems to get worse when its at operating temp or after a long trip. i know that the nv5600 has this type of issue but does that also include the 4500? also after i have driven it around for a while it seems to buck when starting in reverse.



any ideas of what this may be? and could it be from driving style? is starting in second gear too rough on the clutch? thanks

No, my 5600 is quiet with the clutch in or out. It rattles some when you first take off though - which is normal.
Sounds like you have a throw out bearing going bad. Assuming you don't hold the clutch in at stops it may be because they didn't clean up the splines enough for it to release and has been dragging. Or maybe they didn't even replace it when they did the clutch (doubtful).
I would take it back to them.

ok, I am going to give the guys a call this week. No i am not holding the clutch in at stops, is there anything else that i could be doing that could cause it to go this fast? thanks

Sorry and not to harp on a point but just resting your foot against the clutch pedal at stops ( a habit I had a hard time breaking) can start the throw-out bearing spinning.
There's a chance a spring or something else broke and is causing the problem - wouldn't be your fault, just defective parts.

It sounds like your disk may have compressed/broken some springs in the hub. They (hubs) are not all created equal. You may have gotten a light duty one, especially if you are still running the original 12-1/4" size. The Cummins requires the heaviest you can buy in this area, (hub).



2nd gear starts are fine, empty. With a hydraulic release system, the throwout bearing turns all the time.

It's probably nothing more than gear rattle, nothing to worry about.

Our clutch release bearing turns continously, it does not have freeplay.



Engine running = bearing turning.



Resting your foot increases the load applied to the bearing. Not good. The preload applied to the bearing comes from the spring inside the slave cylinder pushing against the fork, against the bearing , against the spring tips.



The type of clutch disc used OE style vs. higher torque can often allow noises to be created in the trans that the OE style disc helped filter out.
