Truck idle, cold start!!

2006 5.9 Diesel Cranks / Turns Over But Won’t Start

My father's truck is a '03 with 337,000 miles on it. Original NV5600 transmission with a South Bend clutch 120,000 miles ago. Local diesel mechanic shop diagnosed a clutch pedal vibration feel to a worn input shaft on the transmission. My question: For years TDR has endorsed Standard Transmission and Gear out of Texas offering quality rebuilds and upgrades to all degrees. Is it worth the cost to go with Standard for a rebuilt NV5600 or just have a local manual transmission guy do a rebuild here in Portland Oregon.

IIRC you need to have proper tooling to do a good job of the rebuild. At 337,000 miles how much longer does he plan on driving the truck? Often being cheap costs more $ in the long run.

CToney - My Dad has said for years that he is going to continue to drive his truck for many years to come and has no intention of getting rid of it. I am in agreement whole heartedly that if you go the cheap route, you may end up regretting it if it prematurely fails due to cheap parts or work. Thanks for your response.

Standard Transmission and Gear used to have two locations: the one in Tuscon, AZ looks to be closed now per Google. (Retired? Tuscon ran independently and was doing so when I had mine rebuilt there.) Regardless the fellow in Tuscon took the time to figure out why the rear bearing kept burning out in the NV5600's. The final fix that all new NV5600 cases have nowadays is a better oiling via a rear bearing notch machined in the case. So they don't just rebuild the transmission: they know it inside and out and improved a critical area the NV engineers screwed up and FCA didn't address. I understand all rebuilds get this machined into the case from Standard Trans and Gear. It's difficult to find shops and places that do a good job, expensive to yank the trans for a do-over, this is not a simple trans to rebuild, and I am glad I had mine done there from recommendations on here.

Are you running the Eaton PTO string filter kit or coolers? In checking Genos Garage I find they have a "new" Fast Cooler filter kit that just made my Xmas list!

Other advice is to get a new "Shifter insulator bushing cup" for the end of the shifter to eliminate the "slop feel" between the gates. It really makes a difference. FCA only sells the complete shifter to get the part. Core Shifters sells this part and they are also on Ebay. https://core-shifters.com/collectio...ot-ball-cup-bushing-99-05-dodge-ram-2500-3500

I would contact Blumenthals ( http://www.blumenthalmfg.com ) they were the official warranty contacts for D/C. They have the machinery and can manufacture most parts needed.

Richard Poels of Standard Transmission, when he was in Tucson Az, rebuilt my G56 did and did an awesome job. However Blumenthals has the proper machinery to manufacture parts as well as being the authorized vendor for New Venture. Go with Blumenthals.
