A friend of mine has an '03 w/ a Cummins HO, stock, eliminated muffler, and 90,000 miles. He says that he has a really hard time w/ it sticking on high idle. Like when he pulls up to a stop light, it will stay revved on high idle. He says the only way he can get it to quit, is to lug the engine way down. He took it to the dealer and had the computer scanned. It showed no trouble codes. So they replaced his lift pump off the engine, to the in-tank model. Still the problem exists. Also, he says he will occasionally have a rough idle. What would cause this?

I had a similar condition with mine a couple of years ago. The problem was in the connector block onto the ECM. There was a problem with the pin size and there was a poor connection between the ECM and the wire harness. The connector block on the wire harness had to be changed out. I was out of warranty so unfortunately it cost me about $1400. 00. The repair did fix the problem. It took the tech a couple of tries to find this and some time with the Tech Line. Not sure but I think this problem was on earlier 03s.

This is a very common issue for the '03. There hasn't really been a good explaination, but maybe the pin and ecm thing is the fix. In my case the Smarty fixed the high idle. Not sure what causes it, but it is deffinately electrical.

BTW, there is a 3 or 4 page thread on this. YOu can probably find it with the search engine.

Did a search, found all sorts of stuff on rough idle, no high idle thread. I probably looked over it. I don't know about these trucks.

I think the thread started as an injector question thread. I'll see if I can find it. There wasn't much info on a solution just a bunch of people with the same high idle condition and the dealer having no idea why.

Have you considered the APPS (throttle potentiometer)? There's a way to replace just the little pot, without getting the whole assy. Way cheaper, direct from Cummins. Don't know part #.

Or even easier, a sticky cable?( I have relocated my pot to the pedal way back in 2003, no more cable. It was vibrating too much for my liking. Now they come that way from the factory, but I don't know if they can be retrofitted).

And I just remembered, there was a recall for a cruise control problem early on in 03, having to do with idle speed. Was your truck reflashed for that?

I don't think it has been flashed, but I will see. This is my friends truck. We are both having troubles w/ our Dodges at the same time.
