Can it be done. I have a 03 motor and a P 7100. Would a guy have to swap out the front gears out of a 12 or 24. Because of the different cut cam,cp3 gear.
 
Honestly I don't know the differences between the geartrain, but I would say the electrical nightmare would scare even me off. I work for Mercedes-Benz. How do you plan on fireing the injectors? Do you plan on having custom injectors made for this?



If I was going to P-pump something I'd do a 24 valve, not a 3rd Gen.

if you did a p pump conversion, the pump would control the injectors. it would be interesting to see. a pump conversion has been done numerous times to 24 valve motors. so i would probably just do it with a regular 24 valve head, if possible.
 
That's what I'm saying. The bottom end hasn't changed. The injectors on the new 3rd gen engines are electronically controlled. The P-pump normally opens them by pressure. Less pressure than is in the fuel rail on a 3rd gen. To try and keep the 3rd gen head, You would have to either have custom injectors made, or change out the head.

I think that 24v injectors will bolt in without a problem. The only difference I see is the 03 fuel tubes are indexted but look to be the same.
 
the 03 head is basically the same as a 24v , I have a 04 head in the works for my new motor . the problem is the block is total different , the p pump front cover will not bolt on like it will on the old 12 24 v blocks , I could easily drive the pump with a belt drive like on a pro stock cam drive , but this in not a street optation. the injectors from a 24 valve will bolt in . the is no advantage to a 03 and up block when doing a p pump conversion to a 24 valve except about 40 lbs of weight , to me thats the world , but to you guys with big trucks no problem.
 
Little tougher than you think, i've done several 24v conversions. The short block is different and so is the head on a common rail. The head has different inj. line threads. The block is wider at the bottom and narrower in the middle. You would have to redesign the front housing. You would be better off doing the conversion to a 24v 98-02. The common rail is an awesome motor, i love p-pumps for the raw power, reliability, but the p-pump lacks the ability to increase timing (other than static timing) and the most important thing is that the p-pump can't increase fuel duration and multiple shots of fuel on the same stroke.
 
Well that is what I needed to know. I might try it the hard way and keep is common rail. This motor had ran away from crank case dilution at the dealer. They voided warranty because of ez. You might ask how did it run away. turbo bearing blew from a few gallons for fuel in crank case. Sprayed oil/fuel in to motor. All this from somone fixing a leaking return line back by the tank an hose clamping off the cp3 return. That ramps the pressure up to max at idle blows fuel pass the front cp3 seal in to crank case. So I traded the shop an new ez. for a almost complete 03 305 hp motor some idiot cut the wiring harness and is missing the ecm. So the good news is motor ran with a knock, the cylinders and pistons look fine. So I think it might just need a new set a bearing. Back to the drawing board for me Thanks for the good info
 
I would keep it commonrail. Electronic diesels aren't nearly as complicated as an injected gasser. Get an ECM and wiring harness and hook it up. There is a place in Fresno CA (i think) that are doing commonrail conversions. You might try to find em and give'em a call. There was a post on here somewhere with a commonrail in a 1st gen that these guys did, try a search.
