I think my truck has a 47re it is a california SO. It has 103,000 miles and it is starting to shutter from time to time towing my snowmoblie trailer up the grades. I have two ?? what is the best way to build it i have a smarty jr in it and the trailer is around 8000 lbs and i pull it up some real steep grades at low speeds. The next ? is has anyone put a manual in one of these if so at what cost?? thanx

The 8th digit from the left of your VIN is your trans.

6 = 47RE

C = 48RE

What is your budget?? It will cost approx $5000 to $5500 for a completely rebuilt and STRONGER trans and 3x torque convertor with a billet input shaft and a laminated flex plate.

Do a search on GOOGLE or the TDR with something like "48RE performance trans" and you will find tons of info on what mods you will need.

With 103k, you should consider a complete rebuild.

If all your are towing is the listed weight and you don't care to race or sled pull, upgraded TC plus upgraded VB plus a few internals is all you really need. About $2500 total with a decent rebuild should cover it depending on labor.

Slow speed towing is a bit more to address correctly. You need to get the TC locked in 1st and 2nd so that will take a lockup controller. You REALLY should have a billet input anytime you change the factory lockup controls, but, if you only use it in slow speed and are careful with the throttle it will work quite well.

Upgrading the pump, input and front drum to the 48RE parts would be a good step also but not a must. With that many miles you obviously know how to drive it and now it is suffering from a little Smarty shock. No worries, you don't have to dump big bucks to get the trans to hold moderate power use and upgrades. :)

trans

I have a BD trans lock and E-brake on it i dont want to dump a ton of $$ into it i just want it to hold up to the loads i pull and the power it makes.

trans??

Well hear are the deals i have found so far there is a local guy that builds sun coast in house for 4800 otd or i can put a re man from dodge in it with a 3 year 80,000 mile warranty or just put a upgraded converter in it and cross my fingers.

Can't you find somebody to just address the major issues? Sounds like they want to do it all or nothing.
