i just got a 03 recently, and starting to notice pinging or almost sounds like a sparkknocking in a gasser. I used a fuel additive in my last 100 gallons but no change. I didn't notice this when I first got it, and never heard anything like it in my 99. It only does it at early acceleration and then clears up. Anyone got any ideas?

Maybe loose injector holddowns??

Your (pinging) is due to advanced injection timing with light accelerator depression and timing shifts to retarded (less advanced) when rpm's and load increases.

This is normal and desirable. Also been incorporated in cummins big bores starting with the mechanical variable timing (old days) to todays fully electronic engines. The advancements over the last ten years in diesel technology has been astronomical.

I noticed a lot more of a ping-like sound with the high pressure boxes. I heard it with both the Ramifier and Xzillaraider on high levels. If it changes the sound of the engine, I don't like it. I don't use high settings of pressure boxes anymore.

I was told that the change in sound is due to the timing advance created by the box (Xz), and that timing is advanced, even at idle. The sound my truck makes when warm are the same now as before the box. The exhaust sounds completely different, though. Much more of a bark at the mid and high settings.

When my truck is cold, and/or is very cold outside, my truck will ping as well. It seems diminished when running Stanadyne Performance Formula.

I thought it was a characteristic inherent in diesels---That they're loud when cold. I used to have a naturally aspirated 7. 3 Ford. That thing would make your ears bleed until it warmed up. The neighbors definitely did not like it at 6am :-laf

This may be but the TST box also advances timing and I don't notice the extra ping/rattle when running it. I also don't notice it when running the stack with the pressure box on lower levels where they should both be adding timing. I don't have an answer, this is just what I've noticed..... on a truck at operating temp.

Interesting that the TST doesn't change the sound of the truck. I think I'll be getting one in the near future. The curiosity is killing me. I was just apprehensive about all the connections, and killing my stock turbo... .

I guess if I do kill it, it'll be a good reason to upgrade.

I don't mean to say the TST doesn't change the sound of the truck, it does. Any power mod will. Changes in fueling will change the sound of the turbo, intake, exhaust, etc. What I don't notice the TST doing is changing the overall sound or "pitch" of the truck if you will. It is more like an amplification to the sounds it already made as oppose to making a new sound. The ping/knock I experienced with the pressure boxes was definitly a new sound.

If your truck is a 6 speed, please read "2003 reflash blues".

Mine only had a momentary rattle when accelerating and I mean just an instant, then grunt. Now it rattles like crazy, especially when cold, for several hundred rpm, when accelerating lightly. It does quiet some when warm.

If your's is a 6 speed, and hasn't been reflashed, don't let em do it, don't even take it to the dealer or it will be done.
