My '03 now has a new motor from Al's diesel. It cranks fine, but will only fire every couple of start attempts, and only for a few seconds. When it does fire it runs smooth, like it is running on all cylinders. Why won't this thing run???? It seems to be getting fuel, and the crank sensor looks ok (what is the proper clearance?).

I read a rather interesting article the other night about an ISBe intermittent no start, but once started ran great.

What they found was one HPC (high pressure connector) loose. Now you wouldn't think that would cause that kind of trouble especially on just one cylinder but where the HPC bottoms in the injector the return orifice can be reached by a cracked or loose HPC.

This condition was allowing too much fuel to be returned from that injector into the cylinder heads fuel return passage. It also was the cause for lowering the rail pressure below the minimum 5000 psi needed to start.

I would first check (while cranking) for good lift pressure, then good rail pressure before going to the trouble of checking torque (37 ft lbs. ) on all of the HPC's

Post back on what you find with pressure numbers.
