I thought my auto was a 4 speed. It feels like it shifts 4 times, so 5 speeds. It almost feels like a half gear between 1st and 2nd. Anyone else notice this.

Hey TAllen,

I've notice the same thing, when Im at dead stop and take off from the light, I actually counted 5 shifts, I also looked at the RPM's and they also went down at each shift. Im new to the Dodge diesel so what do I know.

Hopefully though.

I'll back CLAYTON up and verify that it is the torque converter locking up. It should lock up at around 50 mph with the OD on or off. It locks up in 2nd gear around 30mph, but you have to have the selector in 2nd.

I don't think anything has changed from '03 to '04. 5.

2broke, I think you have it, thats what it feels like. Is there any way to get it to lock up in each gear. The tack climbs way to fast as compared to the speedometer, it's a waste of fuel.

I know this is a 4 speed, but mine does something simuliar... It will go from first to second (or maybe it is 2nd to 3rd) and then there is something that occasionally happens that feels like it is coming back into the previous gear again for a brief moment and then back into the higher gear...

You have to drive it with a very light pedal to make it happen, I am just suspecting that it is hitting the higher gear to soon and then bumping back into first...

this is with the selector in "D", way below lockup speed, and is definately not a converter locking up, the valve body is making this shift...

I notice mine does the same exact thing. Seems to shift up, then down, then immediately up; all during light pedal, and all pretty fast.

Seems like b. s. torque convertor slippage.
