I am just north of NY state border in Canada. Our trucks do have to pass an annual commercial safety... ... . anything imported across border must also pass safety and etest.

I have looked into importing rust free stuff but they dont make it easy and from my experience, rarely is the discription and agreed upon condition the same when you actually show up and see it in person.

I usually prepare a list of questions (just so I dont forget anything) to ask and specifically look at certain areas. Even then, there are issues.

The Dot rules up hear state that if truck does not come equipped from factory with box ala CC along with GVWR rating of truck it must be run with CVOR it used in business... paraphrasing from memory. We have a very good contact in DOT that has steered us out of trouble on occassion:rolleyes:

The trucks normally idle 2-3hrs at jobs(in winter more so) and up to 8hrs on occassion.

The SCOR allso state that Tow trucks are exempt. Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration (CVOR)

So. . unless we are missing something the CC option would be a good option for you.

S. Morris,

I skim read the CVOR regulations posted by MAshley above. I saw nothing that separates a cab and chassis truck out from an ordinary pickup. The spec that triggers the CVOR is 9,920 lbs. GVWR which is all dually pickups and all later model 3500 SRW Rams. I read nothing about trucks sold without a pickup bed.

I also saw no specific requirement for driver's log books although they might be mentioned in some other related regulations. I would bet Ontario's regulations are like US - driver's logs are required for commercial vehicles but not when in daily use out of the same terminal returning to the same terminal at the end of each day and when operating within a 150 mile radius. I have paraphrased this USDOT regulation from memory and it may not be precisely complete and accurate but is the general gist of the rule.

The Ontario CVOR certificate seems to be identical to the USDOT requirement that requires trucks used in commercial activity to have DOT registration but not a commercial driver's license if operating a vehicle or combination vehicle with GVW or GVWR 26k or less.

What I'm saying is I read nothing that would prevent you from using cab and chassis trucks.
