51" Donaldson Exhaust installed Today
Well, after weeks of reading threads and asking questions, I finally had my exhaust done. I started out about 2 weeks ago installing a Donaldson BHAF on my stock elbows and pipe. Honestly, I have just the right amount of turbo whistle. I know I could remove the baffles, or install a torque tube, but I'm happy with the sound as is. More pronounced than stock, but not obnoxious.
Today I had the Donaldson M090544 51" muffler installed. Just to clear something up, this muffler has a some sort of crimp about 16" in from the inlet. It is not as much a baffle as one might think. The 4" perforated pipe is just crimped. It is full of holes, including where it is crimped. Then it opens up to a chamber, before the 4" perforated pipe begins again all the way to the outlet.
I deliberated banging out the crimp, but decided to leave it alone. Overall loudness is not what I was after, just throatier and deeper. I got just what I wanted. This muffler is not for someone who wants a real loud exhaust note from in the cab.
I've heard the term quieter and louder at the same time used about this muffler, and couldn't understand how. Well, it is true. At idle, and standing at the back of the truck, it is much deeper. Not loud, just deep. When you pop the throttle, you could really hear the diffrence. While driving with the windows up, the sound is very mellow. If you put the passenger side windows down while driving along side something, it seems louder and deeper than stock.
Overall I'm real happy with everything. As far as MPG goes, it is a little early to comment, but after resetting the overhead it averaged 20 MPG over about 70 miles of mixed driving. My past few tanks have been in the 18 range. It could be a coincidence, but only time will tell.
Pics will come soon.
