The dealers now have flash for TSB 18-037-04 available on their TechTools machines. The TSB is for white smoke below 50 degrees, and fuel mileage improvement of approximately 1 mpg, and correction to overhead fuel economy.

Had 18-037-04 done this morning

Hi to all, I have been a member for a while, but never posted anything. I have an 04. 5 3500 Dually 4X4 48RE, and like a lot of you have been rather disappointed with milage. Typically about 12. 5-13. 3 hand calc'ed, about 80% at 65 MPH. Called my dealer this morning and they had 18-037-04 available, so I took it in and had it done. Only thing to report on the drive home, it seems smoother, not as much of the "pinging" I had around 1500-1800. Overhead was showing about 15. 2 and used to be abput 13. 3 on the same trip. Will have to let you know about fuel milage... . Thanks to all for the great information I'm getting here... ... Robert

RobertN,

I hope you bring the news everyone has been waiting for. My milage has been about the same as yours. I will start pinging my Service Manager about the TSB next week and find out what they have to say.

Thanks for the update.

I will update with any info I have.

Should also add that I didn't have any issues with white smoke or anything else, no injector problems. Just was interested in the MPG aspect of it... Robert

RobertN,

Same here, no problems with the engine performance, (I can't make it smoke no matter how hard I try) just hoping to see the mpg numbers that others report with same vehicle.

I drive round trip about 60 miles a day starting tomorrow, I should have about 300 miles by Thursday. Just filled up and will do so again on Thursday... ... Will let you know.

Thanks for the reply, I just went to my dealer yesterday complaining about poor milage, on my 325/600 engine, his response was Dirty air filter(which I had them check and it was determined was clean by their Tech), he then responded dirty fuel filter, suggested changing the fuel filter, and nothing was out of calibration on the truck. I guess I just have a out of date Dealer, please keep all informed about the update, as I am going to try again later to get a response from the

dealer.

Maybe I will get some response here......

I have a HO 600 SLT 2500 SRW 4x2. I have always gotten decent mileage! However, I tried this "Valvoline Synpower Diesel " fuel additive. Has the cummins symbol right on it. My mileage loaded (7500lbs gooseneck loaded) went from low 14's to Low 17's MPG just using this stuff. Some mtn driving, etc. TOns mor power etc. The bottle says to ad it every 3,000, would it hurt to add it each tank full? I tested mileage with and w/o this stuff. It really makes a big difference! I started a thread on this and have not received any reply's!!!

The first one I visited did the same to me too... the second one was no questions ask... whatever I wanted/needed done. Amazing the differences out there.

I tried it twice without any kind of noticeable change to anything... but this was before 18-007-04 TSB. Not sure about it now though.

I wouldn't be whining about that kind of mileage. Same load I'm seeing far less economy. I don't see an additive adding that kind of mileage. Like a K&N on a stock sports car adding 20hp.

I'd like to see a dyno graph before and after the flash. They have to be getting fuel economy from something, and I am sure it isn't compromising on the emissions.

Do I understand correctly that this TSB re-calibrates the overhead to more closely match actual calculated milage? and does not actually improve the fuel efficiency itself?? are they just tossing a bone to quiet the griping?

After reading the previous posts thats what is sounds like to me also. Until some who hand calculates mileage pipes up about an increase I am skeptical to believe the overhead computer.

Even though I drive the same "route" on a daily basis to & from work mixed highway/city driving my 04. 5 600 with 3. 73's 48RE never gets the same mileage and for a while has been dropping as I add on the miles. I have noticed black smoke in the mirror from time to time & have what I think is more than average soot on the tailpipe/rear quarter. I'm not as bad off as some but I think that 14. 8 mpg out this tk unloaded SUCKS! If the flash only gets you 1 mpg I don't know if it's worth having the dealer in my area under the hood of the truck. They like to sell 'em but can't service them very well at all.
