Traded my '03 today and had the TSB applied on the 'new' replacement - before delivery - see signature - suprised the dealer :-laf

Thanks for the info - it was priceless. .

PS: the avg milage on the overhead was 'reporting' around 16mpg on the way back from the dealer - approx 75mi trip (50@70-75mph rest at 55-60) with another 50 or so just driving around 200mi on odometer now. . For what its worth... :)

I know the title of this thread is for '04. 5, however - what is the status for early build '05's? has the low mileage problem been addressed on the '05's? I'm still on the first tank and the overhead is showing 12. 7 (all city driving). My '05 truck was built in mid August.

Probably have to get a hard copy of the TSB for covered applications - gut feel :) is that it is likely to. . - have to talk to you dealer to see if it applies to 'your' vehicle.

City driving will swallow fuel - need to get it in overdrive and keep it there to honestly check its 'potential' - 55-60+- =? / 70ish =less / 80+ = very diminished economy with a stong possiblity of a friendly visit by a uniform and a flashing light. :-laf

I supposedly had the reflash done today, I really don't know if they did it or not, overhead still reads bout the same, poor, but I do have a hard copy of it, scanner is on the fritz or I would post it. If anyone has the tools to be able to scan and post it and also has a fax machine, PM me your fax number and I will fax it if you will post it so evryone can have a copy. This is 18-037-04.

I really don't know what some consider city driving. It must vary from state to state. When I say city driving in Los Angeles, I'm talking stop and go up to 40-45 mph tops for no longer than 1 mile at a time.

My normal all city driving gets me MPG's in the 11's. If I go on a road trip (i. e. Vegas or Nor Cal), my highway MPG's are in the 14's. Most of the time hand calculation is 14. 8

I have talked to two other Cummins Ram owners, one with a modified 1st Gen and another with a stock 2nd Gen. Both agree with my city mileage being normal. Their highway mileage is way better though with the 1st Gen always getting over 20 MPG and the 2nd gen at around 17 MPG.

if I could get 16 MPG consistenly on the highway, I'd be really happy!

My truck is due for its first service, I'll mention the TSB to them and have them do it, even though my truck is doing ok mileage wise.

Mine has 5600 miles on it and runs in the high 15's to low 16's combination stop and go city driving and running up and down the steep twisty hills where I live. I have only taken it on one road trip long enough to get a feel for the highway miles. The truck only had 1500 miles on it then and I had 100 around the town miles on the tank when we left with the overhead reading 12 average. I filled up at 597 miles and averaged 18. 6 mpg hand calculated. The trip was pulling the grade up to Tahoe at 75 and then a lot of driving around at the lake so I'm happy with the mpg's. I know the truck is getting better now as well, back when we went on that trip I was averaging only in the high 14's for my normal combination driving. By the way my overhead is always within 2 tenths of my hand calculated mpg's. I find it interesting that the one post said his truck didn't ping as bad after the reflash. I like that, my truck pings like crazy.

I'm getting the reflash tomorrow. I get good mileage with mine, I got 15 mpg pulling a 14 ft enclosed trailer weighing 3500 lbs this last weekend on a 300 mile trip. The diesel tech thinks it will help settle my idle down after driving. We'll see what happens...

Does anyone have an electronic copy of this TSB? I would like to post it on my website so that everyone can access it.

Let us know if your mpg change after the reflash.

I just got back from John Elway Dodge in Colorado. I had the flash done and just filled up. I will be driving city and highway so I will let everyone know if there is a improvement. My prior average was 12. 1. I will also be anxious if the overhead is more accurate. Tommie

I went to Arapahoe road. See Wayne and tell him the big guy with the Black 2500 said to take good care of you. Just tell him I am the guy that goes thru Randy the service manager. They are very nice people. I have only driven in town so far but the overhead says 14. 7. I got a average of 12. 1 hwy and city before. I will let you all know after I hand caculate it. If it just made the overhead read higher it make you feel good to see the higher number anyway. Tommie
