2004. 5 Dually 87,600 miles, Built early January 04.

Monday I was driving thru Cleveland, Ohio (250 miles from home) accelerating the on ramp to get on I-80, when Ka-Pow black smoke out the exhaust, Shake Rattle and Roll into the rest area one mile up. Engine was rough running, spewing smoke and oil. Oil was coming out of a crack in the exhaust manifold and bubbling out from between the turbo and the manifold, and blowing out past the valve cover gasket. I spent the night in the truck and called the local dealer in the morning.

Tuesday and still no answer other than Injector Kill Test shows problem with cylinder #5. that they are going to pull the head tomorrow... . thinking it is a hole in the piston. I rented a car and a motel for the night.

Wednesday... I sat at dealer all day..... at 5pm they said they didn’t work on it today but I should go home to Indiana as it will be a week until any possible repair could be complete. Informed me that a hole in the piston warrants replacing a piston only not a complete motor. (I drove home)

Thursday I called at 5pm and was told they found a hole in the piston and a hole in the cylinder. complete motor replacement! Waiting to find out about parts availability tomorrow.

What kind of service has your truck seen? Does it regularly pull a heavy trailer? Any ideas of your own what caused the engine failure?

I feel your pain. Mine went BOOM with 11,017 miles on it. Towing 12,000lbs. 2,000 miles away from home. I was in IL when it happened, I live in CA. '04. #5 Cylinder. Valve burnt so bad a chunk broke off and rattled around inside the cyclinder. Banks 6 Gun/Speedloader system. DC said no way. Banks blew me off, So I paid for my motor myself. $8503 from dealer back to stock. (new long block and redo the heads) Instead I went to Scheid, spent a bit more and now it's built right. I feel for you. At least you got a rental. I couldn't find anything to rent that would tow 12,000lbs. So I bought new '04 Dually CTD 600 4X4 from the dealer my truck was at to get home. BTW: Hosick Motors in Vandalia, IL are awesome people! gave me the truck at cost. Held my down for a few days. Were by my side the whole time. Dealt with the owner, that's the type of people they are. Your lucky there's no mods done. Now they can't say no. Of course it's not the dealer at this point. It's DC. Ask to see the report if they'll give it to you. Sucks man. Sorry to hear about your loss. Everytime I see someone broke on the freeway I know what it's like. Being stuck far from home and being helpless has to be one of the worst feelings in the world. Good luck to you.

driverno... read your story a while back it was a sad one... . Schied is a great place... I deal alot with thier good friends at Haisley Machine.

Wow banks said your on your own as well huh did they at least take product back I hope your not running it on your new engine are you

Ok the latest news today...

parts on back order... Estimated two weeks down time.....

BAD NEWS when that truck is my livelyhood (doesnt help that the wife has been off on medical leave for 6 weeks)!

I'm noticing a bit of a pattern, here. #5 pistons burnt on both trucks. Does anyone think that the aftermarket exhaust manifold made by ATS would help with this problem? Or, is it just an injector or high performance module issue. Curious as to what You guy's that are really knowledgeable about these engines think. I think I've read, here, that numbers 5 and 6 do run hot. Thanks, for Your opinions. I'm sorry to hear of the problems You other guy's are having. Joe F. (Buffalo)

Banks did blow me off. HARD! Right after they told me the 6Gun that was in my truck when it blew got diognosed bad. Asked for a better explanation and they said they'd get back to me. Last I ever heard. I will spend the rest of my life telling people and trying to stop people from buying their crap. Don't fall into temptation. They fail safe/de-fueling thing didn't work at all. I'm shaking I'm so ******. Has anyone ever dynoed their truck with it on. Does it really even make the hp they claim. From what I've heard it doesn't even come close. There's a guy over at DTW that took his off and went back to Edge because it made more power.

ceaman,

Where there any indications of a bad injector prior to the event? Knocking? Loss of power? Hard starting? Smoking? Smoking on startup? Anything that might suggest a bad injector?

Ron

Nothing..... it wasnt acting up in the 500 miles i drove that day prior to stopping for food at the truckstop... . then less than a mile later... ... Ka-pow

I was at Ganley Dodge and seen your black truck yesterday. Jamie the tech was pulling the head. Said that dc makes them jump threw alot of hoops. Good looking truck.

They seem like they will be good to deal with at Ganley. Thanks Marc for the complement on the truck... . allways good to hear them come from fellow TDR members who care!

ceaman,

is your truck at ganley west on lorain road?

thats where mine came from. would it help for us to go there and let them know that there are a lot of "friends" interested to see how quickly and correctly they fix your truck?

i would be glad to go over there and give them encouragement.
