Here is the story.

I've got a buddy's truck in the shop. It blew a headgasket in Florida and he had it shipped up here to me to work a little magic on it as well as fix it.

The head, twins, and the battery on the passenger side were removed before shipping (by a supposed reputable shop in Florida) and the cables hung loose  However the driver side battery was still hooked up. So, that could be in the equation, maybe not. The cables could have very well touched something they weren't supposed to. But all fuses check O. K.

These are the specs.

The TST has been removed, the pup is still on the truck just because I don't want to risk corrupting the ECM until after we troubleshoot this problem.

There are no modules currently installed on the truck (TST,Edge etc... ).

I have tried to remove any possible complications.

The symptom/problem is this.

When the key is turned to the RUN position or the ACC posistion you can hear multiple relays under the hood cycle on and off in sync with each other.

The batteries test O. K. and this is even with a good charger hooked up just in case of a low voltage situation.

Tommorrw I'll eliminate the batteries from the equation by replacing them with new ones.

Also, when the ground cables are connected (hot already connected) you get a small arc from the bat post to the cable.

I've seen many 3rd gens do this, but this one seems a little bigger than most (could just be my imagination).

They will do it as long as you leave the key on. ON,OFF,ON,OFF,etc...

The normal scanners don't pop up any codes (no suprise there).

I don't currently have access to a DRB3 tech tool, but I'm working on it.

I haven't tried cranking the truck very much because I would like to come up with an answer for this problem first. But, the motor does crank over (haven't started it yet).

While they're doing this the fuel pump relay follows suit, that means the FASS just sits there and goes on,off,on,off. Which is one more reason I haven't just tried to go ahead and start the truck and see what happens.

I've done over 30 3rd gen head gaskets. But, I didn't tear the truck down originally, I don't know if there is something I missed puttin it back together.

I did try unhooking the injector harnesses at the valve cover just in case I had an Injector with bad electronics or something. No help.

Let's here it guys.

Thanks,

Wes

Does the engine try and crank and just not catch? If so make sure the lift pump is running before starting, just a thought.

If the starter does not even try to start the truck I would check the battery voltage, if it is to low the truck will not even try to start.

Good luck with it and let us know what you find

Can you locate and identify the problem relays by sound, this will at least give you a place to start chasing wires if need be.

Also are there any other accesories that possibly messed up i. e. alarm. . remote starter.

Are the relays clicking with a well defined frequency like a turn signal or hazzard flasher? And does it stop after a while or just keep clicking?

The truck will crank over. (Haven't tried to crank it long enough to start)

Its not just one relay its all of them or at least most of them.

It will continue to cycle on off on off as long as you leave the key on.

It could be alarm related, but the alarm itself isn't going off or flashing the lights.

Thanks

~Wes~

Just a thought: the alarm may have a disable circuit still activated. If it has already alarmed (before you got it) it may have reverted to a disable mode. I remember helping a lady try to start her car in a parking lot. It later turned out that the alarm had gone off sometime while she was in the store and then silenced after a pre-set period, leaving the starter disabled. We got out her owner's manual and it gave the key procedure for cancelling the disable mode.

If the clicking is from relays, they may 'see' a short and open, reset, then open again. Having the one battery connected during shipping wasn't exactly a good thing to do. It might be worth seeing if it will start. If the power is interrupted the engine should knock off right away. You might see if he has the alarm manual in the truck. Good luck!
