04.5 Seventeen Month Update & Nav. ??

Took delivery in March of 2004. Haul a 10K 5er mostly and the truck performs superbly up and down the mountains between Roseburg, OR and Sacramento, CA. If it does the same for the long haul, I couldn't ask for more or better.



The only defect found so far is the 6 Spd. gear shift plug rotation. It took 7,500 miles (approx total miles to date) to rotate 90 degrees. Only 22,500 miles to go before it comes to the top & I can "pin" it. Mileage perhaps could be better, but vs. my previous carbureted 454, it's great. About 10 towing in the mountains and about 12 on the flat.



Question. Anyone have a recommendation regarding GPS Navigation Devices? Spent some time on the net looking at the Garmin Street Pilot and the Magellan Roadmate 760. The Magellan is similar to the Hertz "NeverLost" which works quite well (or did when I inadvertently got one on a rental).

Hey Jim,



I'm new to NAV systems and no nothing about the current aftermarket units. My guess is they offer more power and features than the OEM unit. Having said that there are two OEM units for our trucks -- the RB4 and the RB1. The RB1 is DVD based with one disk and has mapping. The RB4 is CD based, has 2 disks and does not have mapping but does have street by street displays. The RB4 allows you to play music CD's while using the Navigation but the mapping features of the RB1 do not.



I installed the RB1 last weekend. It's my first nav unit and I can say without a doubt I have no regrets going with it over an aftermarket unit. I just prefer having stuff original in the truck. There's a link below in my signature of my truck and there you'll find a link with the nav install.



You may have already ruled out the OEM options because they're less powerful and more expensive but I just thought I'd let you know.

I got the Garmin 2620 and am pleased with it. The now have a 2720, which has a 3D view and aural street name callout.

I opted to use a laptop computer and Delorme Street Allas software coupled with a Delorme GPS receiver. Benefits: The screen in 6 times the size and there is a full keyboard to use. Detractors: Size, requires a laptop and power. Both perform the same function..... although some laptops can support voice navigation.

Ken, I just knew you were going to get one after you saw mine! :-laf (even though your wife wasn't that excited) Glad you like it, I don't know how I ever got along without it, I use it all the time to find places around the city.

I took a look at some of the "IN DASH" units that where both Nav and CD players. They are kind of "spendy" but so are some of the Nav only units...

Ken, you bet we'll be there, this place is great about 8 months out of the year but you can't beat Tucson in the winter.

I went with the Roadmate 700. Far better than any other model. You get all the bells and whilses in one small package. With my line of work I route 4-5 different locations a day. The touch screen makes it very easy to enter the address. With the OEM units you roll a knob until you land on the right letter very time consuming and the truck can not be moving while entering the address. I paid over 1400. 00 but I see Sam's Club and Costco have them for under 900. 00

Look at one called a TOM TOM. They are bluetooth capable and all. No need for a hands free kit, because it acts as one too. I have tha factory in dash unit, but have 3 cars. It sucks not being able to take one from one car to the other depending on the trip you are making.
