I am just starting to have some injector issues with my 04. 5 Dodge. I am very happy with the power and economy of the engine. Should I upgrade to a aftermarket injector?? Or just stay stock? Opinions please

Don't buy re-mans if you can help it.

I just got back from an one hour, one way trip to Cummins get my re-mans checked,... ... . again.

I went with stock injectors. The first set lasted 183k.

I just put Bosch Motorsports injectors in my truck and I am extremely happy with them. They were $370 each from Sheid Diesel and supposedly have all 6. 7 parts inside of 5. 9 bodies. They were brand new not reman an d rated for a 50 hp increase. The smoke is much less now than it was with the old stock nozzles at the same power level.

AFAIK, there is no company that is actually manufacturing the pieces contained in a CR injector. You basically have a choice of new Bosch injectors or remanufactured Bosch injectors.

The only piece that could be considered and aftermaket piece would be the nozzles, but, if you are already having issues a nozzle change is not likely to solve that. If a nozzle is worn so bad it is introducing problems it is a good bet the rest of the injector is in the same shape.

That is where things get tricky as the remans do NOT have a good track record. You can put a high quality nozzle on a bad reman injector and have expensive junk that will ruin your engine. The only safe route is a new injector then you cna think about nozzles as an additional cost.

There are some good experiences that a 40-60 HP nozzle could add some efficiency in certain cases. Any more than that or different circumstances and they are no better than stock and in some cases worse.

Mods and driving styles probably have as much an effect as nozzles on increased efficiency. It is not an exact science and not everyone gets the same results. If you like the power you have now then a new injector with a new stock nozzle will be adequate.

I would like a bit more detail on those, how can they be new if they are a mismatch of 6. 7 and 5. 9 injectors ?

On scheids site I see LIGHTNING00210 for your quoted price but no mention of Bosch motorsports/new or reman?

Bob, call Sheid's and talk to them. I think the website just lacks a little detail. When I got mine, the part number was Lightning... . something, but all the paperwork matched what they told me on the phone.

As for the 6. 7/5. 9 mix and match, it's hard to say. Those who are really in the know seem maintain that knowledge as "proprietary". Here's what I know about 6. 7 and 5. 9 injector parts:

1. Friend who is lead diesel mech at local dealer says 5. 9 and 6. 7 injector parts are interchangeable except for bodies.

2. Local diesel performance shop says all 6. 7 and 5. 9 injector parts interchange and that 6. 7 bodies will work in a 5. 9 with minor machining. He also states that stock 6. 7 nozzles give approx 50hp increase in 5. 9 applications and that the slightly different spray pattern actually works very well.

3. The one thing that I know to be true about the injectors in question: They are working very well for me. With the stock high mile injectors, my truck wouldn't start under 50 degrees, had long crank times hot or cold, was getting around 16mpg, and was sluggish and doggy to drive. When I put the new injectors in, the difference was immediate. The truck started faster after sitting overnight at 18 degrees than it started at any temp before. The power difference was so great that I just kept thinking "it should have come from the factory like this". Now my mpg is around 18. 5.

That's good information that I have not read anywhere else.

What would you do if you need replacement injectors?

Who would you buy them from?

About 90% of what people/seller(s) tell you about CR injectors are mis-leading or its a case of deception. I won't disclose the method of how to tell Bosch Genuine form the impostors or fakes on the NET. . You will need to call to get a simple method on what to ask ,what to know and how to check.

From all I have heard and talked to some of the guys doing that, the internal parts are the same with slight differences in the bodies.

Not sure I buy the 50 HP increase but its possible becuase the 6. 7 uses more events so the holes could be larger to allow more fuel. On the early motors the spray angle is not an issue as long as you keep the timing in check, 146 degrees to 143 stock. Too much timing and its pushing the edge of the bowl but close enough its probably not a huge factor.

Ona 600 series it would be outside the bowl and probably a death sentence.

What would you do if you need replacement injectors?

Buy a Honda Civic and park the truck. I know, Bleeecchh!!, but 100 miles with a bad injector\tip towing and a melted piston doesn't instill great confidence. :(

Its unavoidable in the long run and I have basically settled on 2 choices. Pull the injectors and send them to Exergy for reman and balancing, or, buy 6 new injectors for TC Diesel and have the best tips installed he knows of.

Todd an I go round and round on different things but I agree 100% with him on the injectors, cheap out and its not gonna be.

Cerb . . I agree and don't buy the 50HP on any angle change only..... the 6. 7 holes are the same size as 03/04. Aways talk to someone before buying. . and Watch out for the impostors on Ebay. (some legit selling does occur on Ebay) but once they have your money and Cores and things go wrong its going to be nothing but drama and heartache.

Thanks for the response B

I have excellent results with new injectors with 40-50

Hp nozzles and pretty poor longevity with remans.

I searched Bosh Motorsports and they show higher flowing

Injectors for Gassers but none for diesel apps

Maybe calling Bosh Motorsports would provide a better

Answer.

Todd, knowing you sell new Bosch injectors and I am sure a good

Source have you heard of bosh Motorsports diesel apps

OK... it looks like I passed on information that was NOT accurate. I called Sheid today and asked them for details on the injectors I bought. He said that they were 100% brand new and had all the current updates and that the nozzles were 5. 9 parts and that they came from Bosch Motorsports with the holes slightly enlarged for the 50hp increase. I'm sorry for passing my confusion on to others.
With the clarification and apology out of the way, I'm still very pleased with them.
