I am looking at a 2004 3500 4X4. How can I tell if it is a "04. 5" or not? I don't know the build date for it, the label was removed when the previous owner put a flatbed on it. I know the in service date was 10/04. What was the switch over date between the early 04's and the 04. 5's? What is the major differance between the two? Is the 04. 5's really that much more desired?

I'm pretty much up on the 12V's and the 24V's but am just beginning to get up to speed on the common rails.

Check the HP rating on the valve cover. 305 HP is a 2004. 0 and 325 HP is a 2004. 5. You can also look for the CAT on the exhaust. My guess is with an in service date of 10/04 that it's a 2004. 5. FWIW, I am getting 20-21 MPG with the 04. 5 in my sig.

Check out the engine sticker. If its a 325hp it's '04. 5.
I don't know if they're any more desireable or not. Mine's been a good one despite it's quirks. It gets worked hard and it just keeps going. My '04. 5 gets about the same mpg as dad's '03 auto. Kinda hard to judge though because of the different trannys and axle ratios... I have 4. 10's.
