Hallelujah!Oo.

Picked up my 04 3500 ST 4x4 QC LB DRW HO 6sp LSD in Idiot Blue ($31,198 out the door). Drove from Bozeman to Moran today on a mixture of dry/snow pack/ice (had an hour wait at Island Park will they cleared up a chevy pickup-into-the-rear-end-of-a-semi-flatbed escapade. Initial impressions:

Pros: :)

Ride is smooth with just enough bounce in the rough spots to let you know you are in a 1 ton.

Steering is wonderful. As someone said else where "Finally a Dodge that goes where you point it, life is good".

Powerful pup, with a sweet power band. Humping over Teton pass was like being in my 12v, and then some.

Radio. There is less static while cruising by powerlines than on 02 or 98 CTDs.

Oh so quiet. Didn't even shut off the power plant at the drive-up window.

Four doors are much nicer than the suicide doors. Full roll down windows in back are like a customer should expect.

6 speed and 3. 73. Wow, the 6 speed seems smoother (less hunt and poke) than my 02. Finally, a truck with the just right gear ratios. My 02 was good too, but I like cruising 70 at 2000 rpms in MT, or 65 at 1900 rpms in WY.

LSD works fine. No, you pot heads, not that kind of LSD.

Lights actually work at night. My 02 had the most pathetic lights of any vehicle I've owned. Well, maybe on par with the '62 VW.

Back seats and more room in back. I do not want a full crew cab.

Seat is more comfortable than 02.

For me, the adjustable steering wheel finally notches at the right spot.

The cruise controls/steering wheel is better than the 03s.

Oh my, what sweet brakes.

Cons::{

Plug ugly compared to GEN 2.

Less room under the hood. I loved the working room on my 98 and 02. Especially when some genius figured out the fuel filter on the 02.

Chinsy Details:

. 01 thinner metal.

No under hood light.

Plastic grill is getting flimsier as the years go by.

Thanks for attempting to put the block heater cord in - I'll fix it so its usable, DOH!

The hood lift mechanism, snicker, snicker.

Why the two-tone interior (taupe roof and upper half of posts) and the dark slate everywhere else?

I liked the lighter grey than then dark slate grey.

Liked the 02 instruments better.

German Engineering? Who fixes a vibration by wrapping a piece of pig-iron around a steering hose? D/C ought to be proud of themselves, NOT.

Door design is a shin banger. Why the curve? No reason not to be straight like previous designs.

Called around BZ for a set of studded snow tires - Ha, ha, ha, boo, hoo, hoo. Guess I'll wait for the Coopers.

In summary, Wow, what an awsome truck. If they only could have made these incredible changes in a GEN 2 body. But then I have to try extra hard to find something to whine about.

After the holiday travels I'll put the Jacobs and gauges in. Probably wait until spring for installing the flatbed so the dogs can be in the topper for the winter.

Ol'Traildog, thank you for the evaluation. I have a truck on order similar to yours, so it was interesting to get an evaluation. Good luck with your new truck.

Traildog--about to order an 04. 5 ST 3500SRW and sell my 02. Will flatbed it as well. Looks pretty easy. Did you get the opening console with your ST? I have one on 02 but don't see it as an option on 04. Worried about banging my head on the mini-van angled windshield. geusterman

Thanks for reminding me. That goes under the chinsy column too. My truck doesn't have the opening console (middle front seat) like my last two STs. I thought it was that way with every truck because no mention was made while selecting the options. I must admit I covered the console on my last two trucks with custom saddle blanket seat covers my friend and back pack partner made (he worked for Marathon seat covers while in college). Consequently, even though I could, I never used the console anyway.

Another chinsy: For cloth seats there sure is a lot of vinyl in the front.

Another Pro: Love the tow mirrors. In standard mode they are great. And I won't have to put the extension on. For sale - extensions.

Pro: Can't help but mention the gear ratios again. Remember trying to back a trailer when they only had 5 speeds, ha, ha, ha. . Anyone say clutch ( or use 4 low). Made me wonder if folks who design things ever test drive them. Even better than the 02 6 speed w/ 3. 55s. I'm not a speedster and this truck has a sweet spot at 2000 like my 12v.

I've heard folks mention head-banging. Haven't had a problem. I have looked across the cab at the overall cab slope angle and mused how ugly. I reckon if one was to use the grab handle it would minimize head-banging. I did bust my shin on the funky curved doors though. Ouch

I'm paying $1059 ($859 unistalled) for either a Temco or Cadet. I will also be "working" the J&I dealer. This is installed with mudflaps, lights, ready to roll, and have a trap door fifth wheel. They will put my box up on the flatbed after installation. Does anyone know of better prices/models. Around Bozeman they were all looking at $1500 uninstalled - gotta love competition. :)

Traildog--I noticed the doors shorter too. Crowding my entry to drivers seat. May go SLT for comfort. I keep thinking THIS one is the one I will keep forever and don't want any electric things to go wrong longterm. Then a new model comes out... . and now with 4 doors keeping everything locked might be an issue.

Regarding flatbeds, I am going to build mine (have built) using those nifty posts off the frame and keep the deck LOW. Cab guard will have the fuel intake in it so to keep it high and fuel flowing when filling. Headache rack removeable for camper but lower cab guard is permanent. Tool boxes on both sides underneath. Center of gravity thing. Larger fuel tank. Side boards (SRW) fold down for wide bed and snowmobiles. When sideboards up I can stash stuff alongside the camper (Honda gen, rocket launchers, fuel... . ).

In talking with a truck store in Great Falls they said the farmers liked steel better because a little weight was a better ride. The aluminum was rougher riding.

Coming through Boozeman (alma mater) late Feb for Cooke City run. Have to see your rig then. geusterman (formerly Great Falls-now Left coast).

Wow, so you are from the Mother Country (aka Montana).

Although my wife and home are still in Bozeman, I work near Moran, WY. I seldom make it home during the winters because of the drive on snowpack/icy roads. Besides, the skiing here and at Targhee is so fine.

I worked for 13 seasons in the Absaroka-Beartooths so I very familiar with Cooke(d) City. Big sledding country and tele skiing in the spring. You should have a blast.

Good luck on the custom bed. Be sure and post some pics when completed. I'll most likely keep the box/topper on until spring just for the convenience and dogs. Then that sucker is gone. :p

This morning I received a horrible phone call from my dealer. Apparently while the ship was in transit to Baltimore it took on water and flooded a bunch of trucks that were loaded on it. Unfortunately my truck was one of the severely damaged units. Chrysler has already reordered the unit, but I'm not so sure about this new engine. The reason I bought this one was to get the old style ISBe. I can't believe this happened after nine weeks of waiting. I'm not sure if I should locate one (I hate buying trucks off the lot) or just take the reordered unit and hope the 600 isn't chocked with emissions, which I'm sure it is. Guys that have trucks ordered on the east coast that knew there truck was in Baltimore on the 18th might want to check on that order to see if your truck is okay. Sorry for rambling on, but I'm extremely angry with DC shippers. I also have a Grand Cherokee that has been sitting in a rail yard 15 miles from the dealer for ten days now.

Gary  :{

If it was me, I'd go with the re-order. S*** happens. No one seems to know just what has been done to the "600", but I doubt that it's junk. I woud guess the skinny on the emissions, etc, will be comming out in the next week or 10 days.

The only way that you can usually get just what you want, option-wise, is by ordering one. I love my '03, but if I wiped it out and had to get another truck, I'd order an '04. 5 in a heartbeat. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Sorry to hear the bad news GNoel. :( You have a unique opportunity here to "upgrade" to the new 600 OR maybe use the situation to negotiate a better deal on an existing 04'. If you wish, your dealer can do a nation wide search of existing inventory out there and have the one to your liking delivered to your destination. The dealerships here in my area do not have alot of inventory... . but I've been eyeballing a two tone black over gold dually with the King Ranch version -- it's really nice.

I would select another from his inbounds, but he lost a total of 8 in this incident. I'm going to take a ride to see what they have to say and I'll probabley just bite the bullet and take the 04. 5. I just really don't like buying the first year of production, but the dealers here really have nothing to offer in inventory. Thanks for the replys.

Dead Thread

O. K.

This topic is officially dead now. 04 Trucks are no longer on hold and mine showed up as planned yesterday (Dec 29th, 03) at Dealership. What a sweeeeeet truck. I will go and bring her home this afternoon and hopefully post some pics of it next year.

The Atlantic Blue two tone with silver on bottom, plus all the chrome trim and grille with the Laramie really looks nice. I have already called Geno's and got the goods coming for it to keep it clean and looking nice.

Can't wait until spring and funds to become available for the power upgrades that are "needed" to fuel my dreams
