My son is using my '04. 5 Dodge, with only about 60,000 mi and no current mods, to haul stuff home from Colorado on my 5th wheel trailer. He called a few hours ago and said the truck wasn't running right. He pulled into a gas station in York, NE to fill up with fuel and now the truck won't even start. (Yes, he put diesel in it :) He's checked into the motel across the street and I'll be calling the closest dealer in Seward, NE tomorrow morning.

I put a box on this truck for a while a couple years ago. It generally worked great but every now and then I would have issues like it would lose power and/or run rough and blow black smoke. Every time removing the box fixed the problems. This box connected to the rail sensor and map wiring. I sent it in to have it checked and they sent me a new one at the same time. The new box did the same thing on my truck, and they said they couldn't duplicate the problem with my old box on their truck, so we determined that it was in my truck's wiring.

It had never messed up without the box until now and I've been running without the box for at least two years. Tonight I've had him disconnect the wiring and hook it up again to see if that helped but it hasn't. Maybe this current problem has nothing to do with the map or rail wiring.

I realize that getting an answer to this problem here is unlikely. Especially since I wasn't driving the truck and can't even explain exactly what happened. I'm sitting 300 mi away in N Iowa and can't give him any answers either. I just hope the dealer can.

2nd the lift pump. Have him open the water drain on the fuel cannister and turn the key on and see if it pumps. This is a warranty item they put it in the tank.

I sent you an email with a number to call in York for help. I also included my cell number in case you need anything else.

He did call the guy you recommended in York. He ended up getting it towed to Lincoln where they put in a new lift pump under the extended warranty and he's back on the road tonight. My concerns over the wiring probably just confused the issue.

Thanks for the responses. I really do appreciate it.
