I am new owner to a 04. 5 Dodge 2500 CTD and am not very happy with the crap transmission in it now. It has 140K on it and wont get out of first and does all the fun stuff that a dodge transmission does.

I need to fix this one up or replace it with a rebuilt one.

what i would really like to do is put in a 6 speed. :D

Couple questions for you guys.

what transmission would that be and how much for a used one if thats a ok of an idea to run a used one.

How is it adding the Hydros for it and will the T case be able to be swaped or is it different.

how hard is the swap and is it worth the money over rebuilding the auto one.

Thanks for the info in advance guys Martin. I live in San Jose Ca.

If your going to start from scratch then you could use either the NV5600 or the G56. I have the NV but would really like to have one of the new 6 speed auto's.

Is there a huge price diffrence what is the advantage of the new one over NV5600. . do they bolt in more less or is it a pain in the ***. i would think they would bolt in.

It will be cheaper and a lot more effective to fix the auto. Unless your towing at or above max GCVW the manual is not as effective in multi-use driving and the auto tweaked correctly will work fine.

Swapping almost requires a donor to get all the little pieces. Your choice but its not a simple thing.

I agree a well built 48RE can be a good auto and a lot cheaper than a manual transmission swap. You can get a rebuilt exchange for $3200-3500.

About what i thought on the 6 speed swap. Thanks for the information guys.

Whats a good way to go for the transmission upgrade this one sucks.

I have normal stuff done to it mbrp exhaust edge juice on it and afe intake with FASS pump. I only tow my rock crawler 4 - 6 times a year and DD the rest of the time. No lift and 285 tires.

Dont need it built crazy just something that will work and that i can use wit out having to baby it.

thanks for the help.

I got the truck back from left coast diesel last week and they confirmed that the stock 48re is shot with a broken band and worn out clutches. Only had truck for a month from when i bought it. Man that guy sold it a the wright time.

Going to get a local shop to rebuild mine with Kevlar parts nice torque converter and other do dads to make it handel my right foot better.

I talked to left coast about 6 speed swap and they told me that computer crap is the killer, you need a donner truck for the swap and thats way out of my price range.

If anyone knowes of a good local shop to rebuild trannys let me know. Kinda want to just drop it off and then pick it up ready to drive.
