'04 Egt

I have a good friend that has a new '04. He installed a DD TTPM (probably made by Edge) and a EGT gauge. He also has a BHAF. His temps run very warm, as high as 1400° under a hard pull up hill with NO trailer. This seems too high for me. He has NO boost fooler elbow and was told he does not need one on a '04. Unfortunatly he has no boost gauge yet, so we have no way of knowing what he is getting.



The question:



1. Do the '04's need a fooler elbow?

2. Do the '04's run higher EGT stock than what we are use to seeing?

3. What temps are you guys seeing?

4. How many pounds boost do you get stock with no elbow and with an elbow?

Well I just hooked up my boost and egt gauges this past weekend(thanks for all your help guys)and I get 24 lbs of boost and going up a very steep hill with the auto staying in second no load it hit 1100 degrees.

Stock, my 04 hit 1275 deg. pulling a 5K trailer uphill (Mountain Pass on I-15 in CA) on a 90 deg day. To keep temps down even with just a little box or Stage 2 injectors, you may well need a bigger turbo. I don't know of a way yet to keep temps safe with more than that. The 150 hp boxes that are coming out will need a lot of magic to keep egt down.

What DD goodies do you have?? I am wondering if the '04's need an elbow to help keep the EGT down. I know on the 2nd generation trucks it really helped.



I wonder if there is just not enough capacity in the stock turbo to make any more boost. If it is not waste-gating anything, I am sure an elbow would not do any good.

When you mention an elbow is it similar to the elbow thats included with the easy box?

Do not use a boost elbow with the 03-04 HY turbo. The boost just gets too hot and egts actually rise under heavy fueling/power about twice as fast as pressure goes above 24 psi, compared to the rise you get if you leave pressure at 24 with no elbow.

That is very interesting, Thanks for the info. I know on my '99, seeing the boost go up helps keep EGT down... Like on a cool day at low altitude vs. a hot day at high altitude. When I can get 30lbs+ or so, my EGT stay under control. When I only get 28 or so, I have to really watch it. I guess the changes in the 3rd generation motor will cause us to rethink our BOMB strategy.



Seems if a mild box causes these extreme temps, and you have to back out or burn a piston, what is the point of buying a box. Power that cannot be used is a waste of money.

Have your friend put the box on power setting "0" and go see how hot it gets. Our test unit got to 1375*F stock.

Good idea, we may even disconnect it for a test run, but from what you are saying about stock temps, these factory motors must be where our "BOMBED" motor were a few years ago. If that is the case then the sequence for BOMBing would not start with a box, but perhaps a bigger turbo, then a box and injectors. If a stock test unit hits 1375°, adding a box first (and 100°) must surely lead to melt-down unless you back out or down shift. I can imagine that there are a lot of folk purchasing Plug-and-Play horsepower that will keep the 'Ol foot planted 'til things come apart. I guess what I am saying is, it seems these motors in their stock configuration are not suited for box enhancements as a first step toward BOMBing.



PS. What are your thoughts on the fooler elbow for 3rd gen. ? or is the HY35 just max-ed out??

If Dodge and Cummins think 1400*F is ok with the changes they made (bigger oil jets, etc), then so be it. I recommend 1250 or as hot as they will get stock.



The 03 HY is maxed at 26-28psi... no need to go over that.
