04 or 04.5 ????

My friend just bought a used truck and has not taken delivery of it yet. We are trying to decide if it is an 04 or 04. 5 so we know what chips to put on it. Here is the VIN 3D7K428C04G128916. I know the vin says it is 2004, but what does that really mean? Would they say 2005 on the VIN and you bought it in 2004 for it to be a 04. 5? How do you tell? Thanks for your help.

To find out you need to look at the sticker on the side of the vavle cover. if its 305hp then its an 04. if its 325hp its an 04. 5

Yea the easiest way is look at the engine ID tag. Its either a sticker on the drivers side of the valve cover, or a tag on the engine-mounted APPS under the intake horn. 325hp is 04. 5.



If it has the factory exhaust on it, 03/04s didnt have a cat. 04. 5+ had a cat from the factory. 03/04s also had 3. 5" exhasut, 04. 5+ had factory 4"

Also look on the drivers door . If manf 01. 04 then it's an 04. 5

There were three versions available in OK. , SO,HO & the 04. 5 325/600 for the 04 MY. As suggested look for date of manufacture then look on the valve cover, The HP rating will tell you.

I'm also thinking that the 8th digit of VIN being a C indicates it's a 305 H. O.

I do not know if this helps but the build date of this truck is September 03

still could be an HO need the HP off the side of the valve cover . Not a 325 "600" engine

I can pull the vin from chrysler someone just tell me what they need, here are some options refering to the engine on this truck, A76P 5. 9L TD Eng(ETH)/4Spd A/T 48RE (DG8), ETH 5. 9L HO Cummins Turbo Diesel Engine

And if its still in stock form you can look to see if it has a cat on it 03-early 04 no cat.

OK now I'm guessing, the fact that it shows HO and you previously posted the manufacturing date of Sept/03, it should be a early 04/HO engine. But I have a question for you, why are you not checking the valve cover for the HP rating? That would be the easiest way to determine the version of truck it is.
