New to the site and need some help with transmission issues. I have an 04.5 2500 4x4 . When coming to a stop it feels like transmission is wanting to lunge truck forward. Also sometimes when taking off rpms will rise but truck doesnt move as it should and then all of sudden torque converter grabs and truck moves normal. took it into a transmission shop had a service and inspect done and they seem to think it is the tc going bad. DOes this sound like a bad tc? Also I seen online that an APPS switch can cause this kind of behavior in tc. Not sure what switch this is. Any kind of help and/or guidance is appreciatted.

That does not sound like a converter concern to me. Sounds more like internal leak of a clutch. The only time the converter would "grab" all of a sudden is if it drained back over night and you fired it up and put it in gear immediately and hit the gas. But even my old Dakota that drains back does not hit hard, it just slips until the converter fills.
A set of transmission gauges would be the smart thing to use for diagnosis. And welcome to the best forum with the most helpful members. Perhaps Cerb will chime in as well.

APPS is the potentiometer that runs the engine speed, it has nothing to do with the transmission launching.

The truck wanting lunge or trying to pull thru the brakes is a typical TC problem, the sprag on the stator is locked and not releasing. The other thing that can cause this type of malfunction is the pump cover warping and bleeding pressure into the TC clutch. Usually this is a constant condition where the sprag problem can be intermittent. Usually.

The opposite condition of the stator sprag not hooking correctly is the truck won't move, almost like it is neutral. If when the rpms go up on launch it feels like neutral then the trans hooks, that could be a TC problem.

If the trans shifts an works good most of the time, all forward and reverse work well, I would say the trans shop is probably dead on. Time to change out the TC for a good aftermarket billet cover one with the crappy stock stator problems fixed.

Cerb you nailed it in your last paragraph. You guys are awesome. Thanks a lot. Now do you recommend any t.v. over another? Also transmission shop suggested a single disc rather than a triple disc. Do you agree? My truck.is bone stock and I intend to keep.it that way except for exhaust. I do plan on getting gauges also.

Single disk, billet cover, either a heavier aftermarket stator or one fixed to prevent the typical failures, lower stall, and better TQ multiplication. You cannot go to low stall if the engine is stock but better TQ multiplication will inherently lower stall and make the truck move a lot better with less throttle.

I would call Goerends and get Daves recommendation on a good single disk for your application.

If that sprag clutch is eating itself up it is spitting metal all thru the transmission. The more you run it the worse it will be. The fact it is going to neutral until you rev the engine means at ANY time it will break the sprag and the truck is dead in the water.

Short answer, it can hurt the trans badly and your pocket book also.
