Please do not refer to me as dude, My Name is Todd ,Twest, or TDR member, Have you ever been to ELK river Landfill ,Or Black Dog, 8% grade or Better in some spots it"s not Long but I have seen trans temps raise 40* in the 90 plus heat from bottom to Top this summer , BHolm just try and keep a open mind on the subject I now consider this Closed, at any-rate take care.

Well Todd, I just don't understand how you figure a lower stall convertor and a TC lock-up control switch wouldn't help. That is pretty much what you stated earlier and it just didn't make any sense. Your claim that a simple fan switch will cure this guys problem is a shallow assesment at best IMO. Even CobraJet, who seems to think you know what you are talking about, alludes to tha fact that a fan override is a small part of the problem and only a short term fix. The fact is, if you run hard against the stock convertor you will build heat. Doesn't sound to me like a cooler or a switch are going to really solve the problem. I just can't figure out why going to the root of the heat production, the TC itself, seemed like a bad idea to you? If it is locked up, its not heating up. If it is a lower stall unit to begin with, it won't generate nearly as much heat. Both of those options seem very viable, not sure why you shot them down. It just scares me when guys who claim to have all of this knowledge skip right over the obvious source of the problem and use anecdotes about hauling double the manufacturers ratings as some sort of proof for your point.

So the fan switch might work at the Elk River landfill, but it is probably of little use to the guy making 6-8% pulls that last an hour. That is where I think a TC and TC control would be the fix. That is why I posted it, not sure how or why you you chose to dispute it.

I can add from my experience that "low stall" TC does not necessarily mean cooler OR necessarily more energy efficient.

My previous truck I upgraded the trans including a low stall converter and was surprised to discover this.

In any TC a certain amount of energy is lost to heat when in fluid coupling mode. A TC can have a lower stall speed but still transfer more of the input energy to heat than does the factory TC. This was explained to me by Bill K. , and I think he knows his stuff.

Gary

PS- as others have posted this truck should lock up in second gear if manually shifted. Mine does.
