Modern automatic transmissions have a computer to control the shifts. I hardly believe many of you are more capable than a computer logic circuit is at selecting a gear.

Just my opinion.

This transmission is dated back into the 60's the only thing that the computer controls is the shift to 4th gear, lockup in 3rd and 4th and the govener thats it! On the 04. 5 up it also controls the tv servo. all other shifts are controlled by pressure and springs just like they were in the 60's

A computer only does what some other human tells it. The computer does know the road ahead and that an overdrive shift would be pointless because it will only be in overdrive 2 seconds before it shifts out again. The computer doesn't see the traffice ahead. The computer doesn't know if I'm about to pass someone going 47 mph and want it in drive for quick throttle response. The computer doesn't know how I like to drive. You get the idea. Driving around the mountians where I live and in any traffic, I have the overdrive lockedout with the DTT controller on to keep the TC locked. This is probably half my daily driving. I think the programing of the transmission shifting in these trucks is a very weak link in the drive train. My dad's PowerHope shifting is so much more appropriate. I think the 48re is better that the 47re, but if I couldn't lockout overdrive, I wouldn't buy the truck or I'd get a manual. Fortuantly, the '06s have this fixed.
