I have a 2005 Ram 3500 Dually, 4 door, long bed, 2 WD, Stick, 5. 9 L, 102K miles. I am the original owner/driver and tow with the truck 50% of the time. The truck is stock and has been great!
On my last trip was towing my equipment trailer and as soon as I got 100 miles into the trip I started to have problems with the engine revving up and producing full power. I emptied water separator and tried treatment with only some improvement. After a couple hundred more miles I found and changed the fuel filter and that helped some. A couple hundred more miles and back to very low power and then white/grey and sometimes black smoke from exhaust under acceleration. Another thing started happening – every time I would shut the truck off for re-fueling then restart and go, it was back to low power, then after 40-50 miles it would regain 50% power. After one of the fuel stops the truck started off low power and then after 40 miles it ran at 100%, then after the next fuel stop it was back to low power. Did not have a problem starting or idling during the trip. Once I made it back home the truck started to stall at idle - could keep it going by blipping pedal.
It is now in a shop I have been to before with my gas trucks and they are having a hard time diagnosing. The lead mechanic is supposed to be a very good trouble shooter – electrical / mechanical with some diesel experience. He has replaced the computer (used) because the original was not producing any codes and there was a voltage drop and the truck would shut down once hot. Now it idles, but still lacks power and stalls after being driven for 15 minutes. The replacement computer is now showing codes but they haven’t figured out the problem yet and keep saying it is an electrical problem. Supposedly the fuel pressure is good and sensors are testing out ok. They even took it to a Dodge dealer to diagnose and the dealer said start with the injectors.
The only other problems I have had with the truck was a tank of bad fuel (no power) – added Diesel 911 and emptied water from separater which fixed problem. On another trip, #4 high pressure injector line cracked at ferrel and doused the engine and compartment with diesel. Had it brazed
by a body shop which held fine until I got a replacement back home.
Any ideas ??? I really need my truck !!
