I have a 2005. 5 Ram 2500 CTD with a G56. I have a problem with my truck on cold starts. When it is 35 or below and I start my truck it stutters for about 40 seconds and blows enough white smoke out to make it look like a house is on fire, it used to only smoke for a few seconds but is getting worse. I know there is a re-flash but it doesn't apply to my truck? Anybody have any ideas? I work for a Dodge dealership in the parts dept. and I have access to TSB's and looked myself?

The late 05's should have had all the flashes incorporated. Since it didn't do this to start with and is getting worse I suspect you may have the start of injector porblems and/or carboning on the injector tips.

What BOMB's do you have?

Are using a fuel additive?

How often do you tow? How heavy? How long?

You need to fill out your truck profile so we can see what you have for a base truck and any mods.

Cheers :)

Ok, yes there is a 2005. 5 you could get both 6 speeds in 2005 and I got the G56. Maybe it isn't officialy a 2005. 5 but they started putting them in half year so I made the name myself I guess. The truck has 12,000 miles on it, I have towed cars and trucks about 4,000 miles only, I have a Edge Juice w/ attitude, straight pipe, and a K&N intake. I have used Mopar diesel fuel additive one time but stopped using it a few tanks ago just because I got lazy. It doesn't ever have a problem starting it starts right up but it sounds like it's sick and puking and carrying on for about 40 seconds until it gets cleaned out or warmed up and starts to run normal. I have no engine light no loss of power and no problems on warm starts.

I would also like to know what everyone thinks of this. I have the same problem, it dosen't happen all the time when its cold but it does most of the time.

I have a late 05 auto and it will blow white smoke for about 15 to 20 seconds after a cold start with temps below 35. I usually wait until the oil pressure gauge moves up and kick the high idle on and it will smooth right out.

Based on what you are describing I would guess you are starting to get some carbon on the injector tips. Dose it with PS/MMO, hook about 10k to it, and drive the snot out of it on every hill you can find for a couple of days and see what happens.

I know mine doesn't like a lot of empty commuting. Every chance I get to hook up to a decent load I do it and drive it hard. The engine runs smoother and I consistently get less smoke and rough running on cold starts.

The Cummins is made to work hard and run better every time it does. Due to the quality of fuel we have and the nature of the HPCR systems it needs some good sustained EGT temps to keep things cleaned up. Cummins position is a minute or less of white smoke on cold start is normal so I doubt you have a problem. What level are you running your J/A on? Pressure boxes are hard on the stock injectors and could create your situation but not sure if the J/A has pressure and at what levels it would use it. Cheers. :)

Thanks for the info. I run my Edge at 1 - TOW all the time unless it's warmed up and I need to pass or blow a little black :-laf I try not to baby my truck around either. I will give your suggestion a shot. Once agian thanks a bunch for all the info.

Mine has always barfed and puked at temps below 35 or so when starting. After about 45 seconds, is smooths out and no problems. However, I started using Stanadyne Performance Formula faithfully about 5 tanks ago (30K on her now) and that problem has almost totally gone away. I have become a firm believer in the Stanadyne product. Seems to give me better performance all around. Just my opinion.

I had the same problem with my truck for a while. Only one time did it ever run rough while it was smoking. I ran my truck down to less than a 1/4 tank dumped in a gallon of power service some MMO and ran the hell out of it with 9000lb hooked up and shes been fine ever since. I now run power service and mmo for every tank. Hope this help. . ROB

Amsoil also has a fuel additive that helps eliminate smoke on cold start up. I use this on my 06s and have very little smoke (one puff) if any on start up.

Cylinder #6 Misfire is the problem. Another quality injector going bad at 12,000 miles on a 35k dollar truck, thats excpected right? I am going to run some additive in the fuel see if it clears up for now, I plan on injectors in the future and I can get it covered under warranty but I am a little nervous about getting the top of my motor tore apart to put a injector in I would rather get injectors and have them all put in because I know if I get one replaced then it will move to the next injector and so on until they all get replaced and my truck has been in the shop half its life. So I'll try an additive for now and see if it works.

Mine ran puny and smoked on cold start from day one(35 degrees or below)after installing a Rokktech it starts and runs perfectly.

Mine's smoked on cold mornings at startup. Did it since day 1. Run to the dealer and start any CTD they have and you'll witness the same thing. I'm certainly not worried about it. It smokes for maybe 5 seconds and that's it. ONLY on cold mornings, never in the Spring, Summer or Fall. Doesn't matter if the truck's been plugged in or not either.

FWIW

I had the white smoke on start up problem after long highway runs with no load. I also got the code for cylinder #1 misfire on one occasion.

The problem was solved via:

- injector cleaner. Best results to date from sea foam in the filter canister and a dose in the tank. I have also read here of the same result from Stanadyne in the canister and tank.

- as DPKetchum wrote, I also installed the rokktech last spring. I have had no white smoke or injector misfire codes since. If you look at the rokktech site they claim the advanced timing raises combustion temperatures and helps clean injectors.

Either way I would make a report to your dealer for warranty purposes in case you do have a bad injector .

Took it to the dealer, they have it recorded if I want to get an injector they will put it in. From what everyone is saying I should be able to run some injector cleaner and get it cleaned out. I plan on putting 80hp injectors in sometime, so I will just go with the cleaner and wait. Thanks for all your help and I will keep everybody posted.
