I have never changed or checked the fluid, due to not having the tool to do so, when should it be changed and with what fluid should be used? I did try to use a bolt that I grinded to fit the hex shape but it did not work because of my grinding was slightly tapered and it just slipped out. Why use such a stupid plug for this instead of a 1/2 drive plug hole instead, factory brainstorm...

Double nut a bolt with a 3/4 head for a fill plug tool. Most people seem to use Pennzoil syncromesh fluid from Auto Zone, and overfill by one quart.

I deliver campers with my NV5600 (I assume that is what you have?) and half of my miles are towing. From experience I recommend changing at the 100k mark. Royal Purple is my choice over the factory fluid; haven't used any others. Put in 7 qts.

Godspeed,
Trent

kind of a hassel, but doable, removing the tower is the way i'm doing it ,adding two extra qt's of Amsoil syn. fluid, total of six qt's for my six speed. if there's and easier way i'm all for hearing it.

You can also drive sideways into a steep grade or ditch. THe plug must be on the uphill side. and add the extra oil. Kind of southern but it works

Is it the G56 or NV5600, being an 05 it could be one of those and they use different oils.

Good catch on the '05 transmission split.

VERRRRRRRRRY important.

I change my NV5600 fairly frequently 30,000 or so IIRC. Don't like the sound of getting one of these fixed, hope it lasts a long time. I use Pennzoil Syncromesh MTF.

both the g56 and the nv5600 need to be overfilled by one quart. i only change oil about every 200,000 miles probably should do it sooner but not having any problems. as for the fluid i have used both the synthetic syncromesh MTF and the synthetic atf4+. as stated the fill plug is 17 mm i think the drain plug on the g56 is 14 mm.

Why do you change your NV5600 fluid that often? The Owners Manual says to change the G56 transmission fluid every 75K miles under Schedule "B". Schedule "A" has no mileage limit as to when to change the fluid on the G56. For the NV5600, which is what I have, there is no scheduled interval as to when to change the fluid for A or B Schedules. It only say to check the fluid level every 3750 miles.

With that said, it brings up another point. If you overfill one or two quarts, you will always have to tilt the truck each time you check the fluid level?

I put 7 qts in my 5600, that is what it will hold without coming out the seals while in use. Once filled with 7 qts there is no need to check the level unless you see that the fluid has been coming out the seals.

Godspeed,
Trent

George,

I do not have any long term study or anything to backup my short oil change interval. I think part of it started when I bought the Geno's external filter kit and changed the oil early and I have changed it at short intervals after that. It is not cheap oil but it is not as expensive as the next picture. The filter is my first filter R&R.

I took the second shot (not my trans!) at a trans shop in AZ IIRC and the story was that it was a ranch truck, had a recent clutch job at Shop A and then about 2-3 months later it is at Shop B getting a full rebuild for a stated "lack of fluid". They found a handful of slurry in the case and no one could explain where the fluid went, period.

Moral of that story, if you are paid to R&R a clutch, CHECK THE FLUID AND DOCUMENT IT!!! Shop A could have been in the clear if they would have just checked the fluid, reported the shortage, refilled and moved on, it would have put them 100% in the clear on that job even if it failer later they have paperwork that documents their work.

I have a set of 2X8 built up ramps, I place both on the d-side, drive up, do my work on the trans, change or check and then done. On a lift this would be challanging. I don't think I put in as much as some on the overfill.

I am not a tranmission builder.

YMMV,

Gary

My transmission is a huge cast iron unit, I believe its the g56.

Superswamper, the "huge cast iron" tanny is the NV5600. The G56 is an all aluminum housing.

You can tell which is which by the gear shift pattern on the stick. If Reverse is down and to the left it is the G56. If it is up and to the right it is the NV5600. Hope that helps.

Wanting to learn HOW TO (SEE pictures, read tutorial, education please)

refill NV5600 6spd.

1) What kind of a pump/hose set-up does it take to pump 6qts of REDLINE MTL through PTO top

bolt hole

2) What/where/HOW do I remove shifter and fill from top ?????

Thanks,
