aftermarket

for those of you that are running aftermarket, what are the improvements? Is it worth the extra $$$. I only want to do this once.

I blew one on a stock engine. Seperated from the side tank.

Does that mean if I've been hitting 40-42 PSI with some regularity if the intercooler was going to blow it would have probably already happened?

It is a good possibility that it will. But I may not in the time that you have it. Or it could happen tomorrow. You never know. That's why I like to over engineer everything. Less of a chance of failure.

Is there any benefits to an aftermarket IC if you don't plan on doing any major horsepower upgrades? I'm planning on a Smarty when they're available and just an exhaust and intake upgrade. I'm curious if any of you with experience can help me out with that. With just those upgrades are the benefits worth the expense?

I've got the banks. It was the only option at the time. I blew 2 plastic one in about a month right after I got my truck. One was blown pulling a trailer bone stock. The second was blown with a box. Not any performance gain over stock with the banks but a slight EGT reduction. It might make a difference vs a stock IC after I get my twins installed but who knows?

I’ve got the highly exclusive “Limited Edition” 2005 CTD with the plastic IC I’ve got 30K on the ticker, and have had a pressure box on for 22K of those 30K miles. I run my truck like it’s a Corvette 60% of the time. I can to this day mash the go pedal to the floor and peg 36 lbs of boost on demand in nearly any gear range. I checked my “Limited Edition” IC last night no leaks, looks great? I don’t see what is wrong with it? But at least I too have an excuse to go aftermarket should it blow.

Most the ones I see just come apart at the seams,It is a covered componet so unless it blows while on a trip not that big of a deal.

I crossed the appalachians last week hauling a load of steel @ GCVW 27,000lbs and was starting to get concerned with the long sustained WOT runs... ... ... and at the time I was thinking "why didn't I just strap the ends together and give myself a bit of safety margin?". From what I've read, the whole plastic end seperates from the body... ... if thats the case, strapping the ends together would help tremendously. I would think that it could be a very cheap and easy solution to people like me who can't afford a "maybe, maybe not" type of situation. I wish I had some dyno time and a few boxes to play with to prove it out. :)

I blew mine up soon after I received the truck, but I had the Edge Juice box on it (the boost with the box is only about a maximum of 6 pounds more than stock?), the dealer replacement has lasted over 20,000 miles, but I just upgraded to the Banks intercooler system with high ram jut to be on the safe side when I tow this summer.

A friend just blow his up too, towing up a hill with about 28-30 pounds of boost.

blown it on a trip loaded

i blew my IC pulling my pulling tractor to a pull boost went from 42# to just 12# egts where through the roof. Me and a freind tok two small ratchet straps and tightened the two ends to the main body and it was still leaking but it did get my boost back up to 28 to 30 lbs to get me home after that I bought a banks techni-cooler and all has been good. shawn

SKnopp, that kind of confirms what i've been thinking... . I should be able to strap the ends together and have no worries about blowing the ends off. I'm just curious how much boost a plastic intercooler could see configured like this..... it sure would be much nicer being able to mod the truck without having to drop $800 before you ever get started.

Chris

True, but if you going to heavily mod the truck then why not go with a larger IC that can cool the air alittle more than the stocker can. the main reason I went with banks is that DC voided my warr and would not replace it. Banks IC did drop my egt about 75* to 150* and gave me another 3# of boost. It all comes down to what you like and what you plan on doing with you truck.

I like Edge products because i have not had any trouble with them, some like tst or quad etc. I have tried all the chips, boxes but tst and quad I'm sure they have a good product but I am going to stick with what i trust and know. good luck with what ever you decide to go with I hope what you do go with will be a well educated decission because TDR is the place to do research and ask questions. Shawn  Have fun with what ever you do. :-laf

I thought of using the cool twist, but the Banks system includes alot more for the extra few hundred bucks. Besides the larger intercooler (with larger tanks and inlet/outlets), you get the high-ram, the larger tubes, hoses and clamps. Also, there was no core charge or exchange.

My 05 (14k miles) blew the plastic intercooler 10:30 at night pulling a 14k gooseneck with horses up a 2 lane road going up a moutain. Ever try to find a pull off up a mountain with steep drop offs with no boost and EGT's going thru the roof?? Dodge won't do a recall, they would rather put us in danger then fix something they know is wrong. Luckily someone stopped to help us and called 911 to get us towed, now I have to fight with Dodge because the dealer wouldn't reimburse me for the towing as I didn't call the Dodge roadside assistant #
