Been on tdr long time but new to posting.

I just purchased . 05, 6spd, with (supposed to be) dealer/factory installed exhaust brake. Seller stated eb disabled when pump failed. shorter stock belt put back on and running ok. reading on forums, this pump failure common, and mainly from vacuum leaks. who is good source for this pump and how do I tell who the manufacturer of the eb is? seems that Jacobs was factory/dealer supplier of many, however the vacuum canister on brake looks like Banks. does not resemble pac, bd or anyother. Geno's has eb vacuum pump that is made by Gould and supposed to be of better quaility. ???????

Also, what programmer is being used for this model, mainly towing 7-16,000 lbs. on gooseneck or 6-8g on bumper hitch.

Both the Banks and Jake use a vacuum pump and look the same from the outside.

What does the switch look like?

You can get a pump from a couple place but Cummins and Geno's will have the best price.

Most vac pump failures are from vacuum leaks, I would leak check your system when you put a new pump on it.

Smarty Jr is a good tuner for towing.

We had the same style pump on our Fords before they switched to hydro-boost brakes... Those pumps were Delco and we found that if we checked them once a year with a vacuum gauge and looked for at least 25" of vacuum and than let a couple of table spoons of light oil go through the pump a couple of times a year we seemed to see a lot longer life out of the pump. I'm not saying this is a fix for these pumps but they have the like design and function and its something I'd try...

Just my thoughts. .

Failures of vac. pumps are all too common. You could fix it and make sure you have no leaks or change it out for a PacBrake or other quality unit.
As far as a towing tuner, the Smarty Jr works very nicely and lowers EGT's but if you dial it up very much you'll slip the clutch. But if you replace that with a better one then you can turn the SmJr up to 100 HP and keep up with the best of them which is exactly what I did.

I would say that vac pump failures were common several years ago, but the frequency of reported failures has really dropped.

jelag, how did you oil them? Just remove the hose and add a little oil there? Any specific brand?

vacuum pump

switch has Cummins logo on side of it. tks for replies. the pump pulley turns, so is not froze up. plan on taking it off today and check further.

I just pulled the vac hose from the vac booster on the brakes, and dropped in a couple of tablespoons of oil, usually a 5 20 that I use in my jeep or car... just something to allow the pump to see some lube and flush out the dirt... use a rag to clean it up... . it usually looks like mud out the pump exhaust. .

Hope this helps.
