my brothers new 3days old

05 ho auto 4x4 shreaded the serp belt with only 400 miles on it

what causes this

what fixes it. .

it makes a growling sound then the pieces of the belt flew off making a racket

jim

Would you look to see that each accessory that the belt drives has the same number of groves in it... ... I've read somewhere that the wrong pully was installed..... But I'm not sure if it was the Dodge or the Ford web sights... ... .

Anyway... one pully with the wrong number of grooves will shread the belt in no time... .

I'd also verify the alighment of all pulleys, and that the tensioner works with good spring tension. If so, must be a bad belt. My truck has over 33,000 on it with the original belt.

I had my truck delivered to me from N. Carolina on a flat bed, brand spankin new, drove it for two days and wham, a broken serp, with only 175miles on it. Had it towed to local dealer where they replaced under warrenty, now I have 5700 miles and no troubles thus far. .

I still think it's the belts that Cummins is putting on them. The Mopar replacements seem to be doing OK (so far, I check mine weekly).

I should add..... my 04 which tows all the time..... now has 108K with the factory belt... crossed the scales with it in Canada this morning..... 9500 KG on the trailer axles... . 20,900 lbs. and my 05 with 10K has the factory belt...

and my 05 with 10K has the factory belt

I realize that the most of the belts are problem free. I just don't see how this many "defective" belts could be on the brand new engines. Perhaps Cummins is getting them from a cheap supplier.

When my dealer fixed mine, they verified (or so they said) pulley alignment, tensioner, etc. But by my count, since my post last August, at least a dozen more people combined here and on DTR (people posted, I mean) have lost belts for no apparent reason. Well, there has GOT to be a reason.

My $0. 02.

Perhaps there were some bad belts from the supplier, they replace the belt and the problem is fixed. Based on the numbers it does not seem to be wide spread problem, and with such an easy fix it is not that big of a deal.

That was my initial thought, but this problem is occurring on engines built from 1/04 (mine, for example) to recently. If it was just one "bad" batch, it would seem to me that it would have happened to a narrow range of people.

My point is, I don't trust it. I check it at least weekly, and this is the first vehicle in 25 years of driving many different makes of cars and trucks that I have had to do this. :-{}

its in the dealer right now.

a tech mentioned to my brother that because the engines are manufactured (complete) and shipped to where they are assembled into the trucks. .

there may be some impact issues or damage from the pulleys being bumped.

this was a hypothosis on the mech/techs part but that they have seen a few of these with problems and mopar is aware of it.

no diagnosis as of right now on what went wrong.

Thanks for that update, Jim. I suppose that it is possible that somehow in transit, the something gets jostled. It would seem thought that normal bumpy hard driving would subject these engines to alot more trauma then just getting knocked around in shipment.

Since no tensioner/alignment issue was diagnosed by my dealer (or some of the others that have posted), I'm still going on the incorrectly installed at the factory theory. That doesn't make sense though that usually these go a few thousand miles before they go.

Please keep us posted on the final outcome.

I started my truck up today and heard a loud hissing, thought i had a boost leak. i started driving and it sounded like i was dragging some brush under my truck, then it sounded like it got wrapped up in the drive shaft. it was a real loud SNAP, CRACKLE POP. then nothing. i drove home and checked under the hood again and noticed half my serp belt wrapped around the fan. not even 3000 miles yet

And, unfortunately, we have ANOTHER one. :( I really would like to know what is going on here.

Was it rubbing one of your air conditioner/condenser lines?

Mine was from being new and I zipped ties the lines to the bottom radiator hose.

I would check the pulley on your power steering pump while it's running. Some of them have a pronounced wobbling to them. we threw a belt with 230 miles on the truck (3rd day we had it) and the dealer replaced the PS pump and pulley. allmost 30k now and no more probs.

Mine too. I'm on my 3rd belt at 1850 miles. After it shredded the first at 700 and the 2nd one at 1200 they decided to replace the power steering pump. I'm keeping my fingers crossed -- 650 carefree miles so far!
