Mine too. I'm on my 3rd belt at 1850 miles. After it shredded the first at 700 and the 2nd one at 1200 they decided to replace the power steering pump. I'm keeping my fingers crossed -- 650 carefree miles so far

Good info to know about the PS pump. I have 9000+ miles on the new one now, so far, so good (knock wood). When the dealer replaced my original belt, he claimed he checked all pullies and tensioners.

Yours is only the second post I've read among at least a dozen of us belt shredders whose dealer has actually found a problem with a pulley.

Is it possible that the 3rd gen fan is too big for the belt? The 3rd gen fan is awesome, big as a Peterbilt. Maybe when all accessories, (fan clutch, powersteering pump/brakes, alternator, ac compressor and water pump are all at max use), the marginal belt will break??

Have you had any other problems?

Mike, no, I've been OK. Almost 10,000 miles on this belt now, so far, so good, knock wood. But these belts seem to be shredding, still. On average, about 1 person per month seems to be posting.

Must be a reason for it.

Not in my case. In my case, both times the belt "jumped a track" towards the radiator. That's the sound I would hear on restart -- the whine / woosh sound of the belt running on the front edge of one of the the pulleys. Within about 2 minutes, that edge would eat the front portion of the belt.

The theory in my case is that on shutdown, the vibration along with the tensioner and the slight misalignment of the power steering pulley caused the belt to jump forward on one of the pulleys. Therefore, in my case I only shredded belts on a restart. I'm not sure if this is the case for the others tho.

Doesn't seem to be the case for most of the rest of us. We just had new belts installed, and, so far..... no one has replied (except you) that shredded the replacement.

In my case, the dealer check the pullies, tensioner, and alignment, installed the new belt, started her up, let her run, and 10,000 miles, and MANY starts later, so far, so good.

There is NO room for error on the pulley on the bottom right of the engine, it runs RIGHT THERE, the first rib in the first groove on the outer edge. Even a slight mis-installation will eventually cause failure.

Gotcha -- Nod. There is one other person that went through a few belts quickly and had their power steering pump changed also. I can't remember which thread it was tho. Supersonic above had a smart enough service department to go straight to the power steering pump so he got it fixed on 1 belt.

Screw the service department, most of those guys have their heads so far up their arses they can allmost see daylight again. Our dealers "certified diesel technician' calls me and asks questions about these trucks, If the computer doesn't tell them what part to replace they won't have a clue. The best way to do anything is to do it your self. I diagnose my own problems and then take it to the dealer and tell them what to fix. Saves me alot of time and money. The trick is to find a tech you can talk to and will listen, and for you to be mechanically inclined and educated enough to properly diagnose your own problems.
