I know some of you have been down this road already... figured I'd post my dealings with this as well. When cold, 10-30 mph, I get a howl in the drive shaft. After a second trip to my dealer, the removed . 002" of back lash from the driveshaft. I was at a loose . 007". According to them, . 005" -. 007" is the spec. I drove out of the lot hoping it was a done deal... wrong, it started howling as before  So, back in I went... Long (painless so far) story, the Service department is ordering me a new pinion & ring gear assembly :) in hopes that this will take care of the problem. I spoke with the mechanic about all this. He seems to be the type that has been turning wrenches for years and knows what he's doing... I felt even better when he said his daily driver is a 2nd gen 2500  Thus far the dealer/service department has been great in working on getting this fixed. So... . I'll wait and see what happens and will post the results. Also need to keep my eyes open for my Transferflow tank/toolbox coming in the end of the week Oo.

I had the exact same problem with mine, it's was my carrier bearing. They replaced it and the noise went away completely. However after 20000 miles on the new one it's starting to howl again. Hope that helps. . ROB

Rob,

I do remember reading of others having the carrier bearing replaced (probably was your post  ) and I have mentioned this to the dealer. Its still early in this and I'll let them work at it for now. I don't really need the truck until April (Florida bound with the family for spring break Oo. ) Thanks for the heads up. On a brighter note... . the mechanic did say the rear diff oil looked good, very little (if any) wear pattern and the school he went to for these axles showed these to be pretty rugged. Of course I only have 12k miles, stay tuned...
