Interesting thread. My 2002 is in for intank pump retrofit. Had no option really but to get it done, long story. Service dept is still having trouble with flow volume and driveability problems they state will be corected. We will see. I'll keep everyone appraised as to the outcome. I may have to add a carter pusher to bring up pressures. :{

why do they even need a lift pump the duracrap uses the same cp3 ip and its just fine and the ford powerstroke if they do have a lift pump then all the 94. 5 and newer psd trucks that my dad and my uncle run have never had fuel problems from a lift pump or ip then u have the old mechanical ones that never had problems anyways just my thoughts on this

Exactly... The Duramax, from my understanding, doesn't have a pump but relies on a primer pump (mechanical). The lift pump on the new CTD's is there just to get fuel primed to the CP3.

I don't remember what year they switched to the CP3, but if your 2002 has a VP44, and they are just putting the stock new pump into the tank, you better have a FP gauge. The new pumps only provide 5-7psi to the pump, and that would be barely adequate for a VP44. I'd ask the service department about this, before they start trying to "reinvent" the fuel system... JMHO... ;)

RJOL-Exactly what I'm thinkin. This is a VP44 in mine and I have guages. From others I have learned that the pressures are low. Also, Dodge does not care about pressure readings; they want volume. 48 oz. in 25 seconds is what I hear. If it makes that and has 3 lbs. of pressure they say it's fine. If they want to keep putting in VP44's under warranty why should I care? I have the 100,000 warranty on the Cummins. I am currently looking at mounting another pusher to help boost pressure and bigger lines.

Am I missing something guys, everyone bagging on the 05+ In Tank Pump, yet there have been very few TDR Post about probelms..... so why all of a sudden is it a bad design? After all, the 05's have been out for a year... .

Understand concern if it's plastic, cheap, wont flow enough for bombs and what not, but doesnt appear to be a mass reliability problem... .

We just had to do the conversion to the in-tank pump on my truck (88K miles). The engine stumbled during mild acceleration and then just quit at a traffic light. Fortunately it was right around the corner from the dealer. Code P0623 or somesuch. $100 deductable.

CPittman I have read in other threads people posting the conversion was done 100% no deductable involved if under 100K miles. They was also over on the 3/36 warranty.

I HAVE A 04 AND THE THING DIED ON ME ONE DAY DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY. TOOK ALONG TIME TO GET RE-STARTED. GOT IT STARTED AND DROVE DIRECTLY TO DEALER. DEALER SAID IT WAS THE LIFT PUMP AND THEY REPLACED IT. DEALER SAID THEY HAVE BEEN SEEING AN INCREASE OF THE SAME TYPE PROBLEM. WORKS FINE SO FAR (1 MONTH LATER).

FYI, CHECK THE FILLER TUBE HOSES. DEALER LEFT MINE DISCONNECTED AND I PUMPED 30 GALLONS DIESEL ON THE GROUND.

:eek: BEFORE THE CRITICS START, I KNOW IT IS ILLEGAL TO LEAVE A PUMP UNATTENDED. I HAD TO USE THE LITTLE BOYS ROOM REALLY BAD. MORNING COFFEE IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. THANKFULLY THE DEALER IS GOING TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THE FUEL AND THE FUEL STATION DIDN'T MAKE A HUGE DEAL ABOUT THE HAZMAT SPILL.

This thread started out as a discussion of the new fuel pump location in the tank of the 05 CTD. If your CTD has the old lift pump, or the newer one before they started putting them in the tank, it isn't really what was being talked about.

I know that Dodge has started to fix the problem of the older lift pumps by relocating them to the tank, but that is a little off topic... . ;)

I just had the same problem had to pay over 3k to get back on the road after waiting 2 weeks on parts. new stock cp3 and f. a. s. s. lift pump.
