I have 140K+ and recently did and R&R on the injectors, they needed it, and the truck had its problems like surging, rough idle and dieing after start. The engine still dies and is getting worse when I first start it in the am and when slowing for a light or turn it stumbles and often dies on the spot. I can restart it easily but is becoming quite inconvenient!! I took it to the dealer and with the DRB attached we finally got it to stumble and observered a drop in rail from about 6k to 1K the assumption is a fuel pump. So far they are having difficult time finding one in the system. So in the mean time I thought I would ask the TDR for suggestions?

Thanks DDeputy#

Try adding a couple(big slug) of cans of ashless two stroke oil to the fuel. If it clears up its got a bad fuel control actuator. The oil or diesel fuel lube/treatment lubes it up and it will idle ok until the stuff is not in the system any longer. Cheap diagnois on that part. Just takes the time to run some treated fuel through it. Don't use LUCAS. Any of the other popular lubes/cleaners.

the number one reason for stalling at low engine speeds is a lift pump that has gone bad, have someone do a pressure or flow test on the lift pump.

I had the same problem on an '06. It turned out to be the fuel filter being restricted from some dirty fuel (all black). Installed new filter and everything suddenly OK.

Could very well be the FCA, did you replace it when you did the injectors? A lot of times a sticking FCA will cause symptoms of bad injectors.

Injectors were real bad,and the tubes had rust and crude all over them. I got into some really bad fuel about a year ago and they just cleaned the tank and did filters seemed to run fine until it started surging. We did the tsb for that and seemed alittle better but when we checked the injector contribution 2 were barely 80's so replaced them and after seeing what came out did the rest. Also had one bad reman from Cummins, only about 80% contribution and it was replaced. OK for a couple weeks then started dieing again thats when we caught the rail dropping off. Conclusion was a pump, I ran the tank down to fumes and left it at the dealer. I took Ketchums suggestion in yesterday and they thought it was an interesting and logical step to check the fca. (Yeah TDR guys) Pump won't be in until tue so I may give the 2stroke test a try mon. Thanks everybody!!!:)

I was told that the adding a fuel lube to check the FCA was a test that STAR which is Chrysler tech assistance was using way back when. I had a friend that came about the sticking FCA and adding fuel lube to it by accident. He swore and all the hotshoters, truckers he asked that his truck had bad injectors. He never had run any fuel additive and started pouring half a bottle of this and that per tank. Well while the additive was in the system it ran fine. Within a tank and half with no additive it would start stalling, bucking etc. low speeds or coast like in a parking lot etc. Ever additive he tried including MMO cleared up his problem but LUCAS. It had no affect. Then I read about fuel lube,STAR and FCAs. Replaced his FCA added no more additive and truck ran like new.

OK picked up my truck last nite which was almost out of fuel, add about a glug of 2stroke oil and 12 gals of diesel and have put about 150 miles on it since and have not had it stumble yet! It maybe surging a little but other wise will idle and not stall. My question is do I replace the FCA of the entire CP3? The dealer will let me borrow an FCA but believes this test proves the CP3 is bad. My impression from you folks is that it proves the FCA is. Comments?

Thanks

FCA . The FCA through a Dodge dealer is like 4$bills or such. Other places to buy them from what I've read in the $135 to 150$ range. Its a REAL simple part to swap. So if they are going to LOAN you one swap it. What makes them or who think it needs a cp3 pump?

OK here is the current info. I have put 56 gals in since approximately 8oz of 2 stroke. That is about 800 miles and I believe the oil should be pretty much gone by now. When I used the oil with the orginal FCA it didn't stumble but still idled a bit rough. They changed the part and I have put on about 600 miles and it starts and runs good including idle. When I come to a stop sign it drops down to idle and stays smooth. Morning starts (1) fires up and idles good no dieing or rough idle. I havn't had it run this good for some time. The mechanics at the dealer were skeptical as they thought the oil must help smooth out the cp3. I won't be using the truck until tue but expect to be a contined beliver. I would like to know more of the basic function of the FCA to understand how that little bugger has such a big impact on the low speed running. I talked to the service manager this morning and he seems to think this method of troubling shooting these kinds of problems is definetly worth keeping around. Thanks for all your help and I will update when I get through with them next week. :)

My 05 is purring like a kitten and especially since I went into the dealer today and brought him upto date on the truck then asked 'whats next and how much' he said "the part came off of a core injection pump so you don't owe us a thing!!!:) Thanks once again for all your help especially DPKETCHUM.

Your welcome. I need to set up so I can take PAYPAL. LOL. Makes me wonder about LUCAS fuel treatment that truckers swear by. Out of all the products my friend ran through his only LUCAS had no affect.

I also thought that was interesting about the Lucas. I stopped at NAPA and grabbed the 1st bottle of 2 cycle oil by Sta-Lube and it worked fine.
