A freind has asked me to ask, he has a noise in 5th gear, quite loud, sounds like a bearing howl, somewhat evident in 6th now. Truck has 100k on it, was not a puller from what we can see. He bought it this fall, finds it really notchy to shift and quite loud. Any ideas ?

I can't help, but we really need to know if the trans is an NV5600 or the G56. Both were used in 2005. Good luck.

Tell us which direction he finds Reverse. That'll determine G56 or NV5600. Also, is he on the factory fill fluid? Which aftermarket fluid?

Notchy & noisy in 5th, sounds like the NV5600 normal operation for 100K. Must be the "trying to find 5th gear" takes it toll on the NV5600 over time.

Fifth is direct coupled, no gears involved.

Maybe low on oil? Some early g56 have an overfill requirement, due to wrong fill port location. If it's bad bearings, it should be noisy in other gears too.
