06 5.9 vs 07 6.7

I am seriously thinking of trading my 06 3500 Megacab srw 6 speed manual with 67k miles for an auto transmission truck. I found a less optioned 06 mega cab auto with 47k miles and an 07 6. 7 6speed auto with 39k. Do you think I should just stick with the 06 or is the new 6speed auto with the DPF worth the trouble??? I am just tired of shifting and have a bed left knee.

Going from an 06 G56 to a 48RE would probably not be an "upgrade" for you. Fewer gears so you would be working the motor with more rpm's than you are used to.

If I was in your situation I would look at a 6. 7 with a good service history (not on its 4th turbo, etc) and do the deletes instantly.

Many of the 07's had emission and turbo problems that were corrected by 09. Those trucks used as a daily driver seemed to be more at risk. Others have had no problems whatsoever. The 6. 7 will already have the exhaust brake. The 5. 9 will get better fuel economy than the 6. 7 but you lose two gears with the 48re. The 06 was the best of the years as far durability goes, it is capable of having an exhaust brake and a TC and VB upgrade will make for a great transmission. IMHO, I would stick with the 06 over the 07. However, if you found an 09 or newer...

I would say Grab the 07 I don't think you will be upset with your choice Lot easier to drive then a stick and as long as you can get a good history on the truck and it hasn't had Major troubles you will be fine .

Can't delete anything here in this county. The 48re has a 10% better od ratio than the early g56s. I work out of a 08 5500 6. 7 with very little issues.

If you can't do deletes and find a clean 06 that may be your best bet.

Our '04. 5 48re turns several hundred RPM lower than the G56 in the '07 in OD.



I for one would have no problem buying another 48re. Other than a blown cooler line at around 180K, ours has been great.

Not really. The ratios for 3 - 6 on the manual are similar to 1 - 4 on the auto. The torque multiplying effect of the TC replaces the bottom two gears.



In any case the OP is asking about the 68RFE (a 6-speed auto).

He is asking about about 06 and 07. 5 auto's, so a 48RE and a 68RFE.



Yes 2nd on the auto and 4th on the AD G56 are within 5%, and 3rd and 5th are identical, but what I was refering to was 4th vs 6th, there is a 10% difference and when towing it will be noticed as the 48RE will spend a bit more time in direct than a G56 will. The 68RFE has a . 82 1st OD that is actually lower than 6th on the G56, so it won't have to spend as much time in direct.

I think I will play it safe and go with the 06. The 07 I found is a full blown Laramie with Nav and Two head rest DvD players and 32k miles. Now all I have to do is install a 2" level so I can run my 37s. Thanks to all for the replies.

3. 73s I guess. I thought they did away with the 4. 10s. in 06

4. 10's were only done away with on the G56 trucks, which started in 05. 5. You could, and still can, get 4. 10's on an auto truck.

4. 10 were definitely an option for the automatic transmissions in 06.

The 68RFE was never offered on the 5. 9, its a 6. 7 only trans.
