I just had my transmission fluid change before my trip, now my torque converter started slipping while pulling my trailer (about 15k) it has never done this before in the 25k miles I have on it.

I checked my level and it was a tad bit high but nothing serious and my transmission temp. never got over 185, could they have replaced the fluid with a wrong type?

Did they power flush it??



I have heard that a lot of bad things happen after they flush it. I have a friend that had a service shop and said he would never have one done or recommend it done!!!

I have had machine exchangers flush my various 48re's many times and never had any problems. If they didn't use the Mopar approved fluid there could be an issue, however, I always had mine done at my buddies independant shop. He used standard ATF from Havoline and then used a Mopar approved additive to bring the fluid up to an acceptable spec for warranty work. I know because when one failed they questioned the service and the fluid used. We had proof that the services were done and an appoved fluid was used.



Was it done at a dealer? Do you know what they used for fluid if it was done elsewhere? Is it still under the 36k warranty?

I had it service an my independant shop and I looking a the receipt now and it say's MERC 4 for the transmission fluid, is that the right fluid?

No it is not the right fluid. ATF+4, not the same stuff as the Mercon 4

I always fill mine with Amsoil ATF instead of the ATF+4. Remember ATF+4 is now readily available from several WallyWorld vendors (Valvoline, etc. ) you don't have to buy Mopar.



Anyway, drain and fill w/ Amsoil - oh, and put a bottle of Red LubeGuard in along with your new ATF (per DTT recommendations... )

The guy said the fluid is good; I tried to explain to him, to no avail, he basically told me to go pound sand.

I guess if it were me... . I would just find somebody to do it right, get the right fluid in there and suck up the $100 or so. Its not even worth fighting with the guy who screwed up. Just share you experience with others, that will cost him more than making it right for you, his loss.



Hopefully nothing is hurt, I would bet if it is the wrong fluid you could burn clutches and bands, especially with a heavy load on.

I think I would take it to your dealer, have them fix it. If they charge you they will be willing to document that the damage was caused by the independent using the wrong fluid. That and a lawyer would get your money back.



I would not go back to the independent. He already screwed up once.

Even if the he puts the correct fluid in the trans, since the lockup convertor clutch already started to slip it might be already damaged.

I went down to the mechanics shop today and apparently I was speaking with the manager not the owner, so the owner informed me that I was correct and only ATF+4 is to be used with no friction modifiers (he used Merc 4 with JB friction modifier to bring it up to ATF+4 specs), he then told me he would take all responsibility for any damage, and said he would deal with the manager.

I felt this was a stand up guy who admitted he screwed up, which is rare in this day and age. It goes to the dealer tomorrow to see if any damage was done.

At least he is attempting to correct the situation. Extremely rare in today's world.
