I'm driving an 06 Mega Cab and really like the truck. I am concerned however about a fair ammount of black exhaust on hard acceleration. The black disipates after a few seconds. Is this normal? I havent made any modifications to the motor. Thanks for the help.

It's a diesel man. Learn to love it. My dads truck is an 05 with nothing done to it and it smokes a fair bit. Everyone thinks it's chipped, I have a hard time telling them it isn't.

I was concerned because my 99 cummins didn't do this. Since the truck runs great I assume this is because this motor is fueled differently and makes alot more power. A local Cummins service center said alot (??) of smoke could mean a couple of things. Just wondering if this is common. Thanks.

Seems to be normal with the 06. Mine does the same, worse at higher altitudes. It smokes up the right rear fender and bumper. I asked the service writer about that and he said it's normal. My 99 didn't do it and it weas white. bg

I have an 06 Mega cab also. In stock form it doesn't smoke except when first starting it. If I use my Smarty it smokes like crazy and is hard to control the smoke - hence I have stopped running the Smarty unless I want to fool around. I would look at a leak in your boost pressure also. If the engine thinks it is getting boost pressure the ECM will provide more fuel. With a leak you have more fuel than can be burnt and thus SMOKE...

Both of my '06s smoked. It just takes a second for the tubo to catch up and provide the air. I doubt there is anything wrong with it, though I would definately check the air filter. These trucks move a lot of air and the filter an get pretty dirty, pretty fast in some conditions.

By 30k miles my Mega was getting a solid 20 mpg, still making some smoke, never any problems. Lots of Dodges around here too, seems like most of them make a fair amount of smoke from a stop.

The new 6. 7s on the other hand are smokeless from what I have seen. Just how the EPA wanted it:rolleyes:

wifes '06 smokes more than the other three we've had when they were stock ...

but that's to be expected at 325hp ...

just think of it as the last of the old school diesel motors ...

Normal. Just blowing the soot out of the CAT and muffler. :)

Acouple of the replies have mentioned the air filter. When I brought this up with the dealer they changed it and that helped for a while. I wish I had done it and saved myself 20 bucks but oh well. That was about 10k miles ago and it's starting to fill up again so it looks like BHolm is on the right track. Thanks for all the help.

Darn cummins. Just sucks in so much air. That's why my next purchase is a cleanable aftermarket filter. Plenty of other threads to read on which one is right though:-laf
